“Subversive disco-pop gem.” Pitchfork – Best New Track on ‘Rosebud’
The sixth studio album for U.S. Girls, the protean musical enterprise of multi-disciplinary artist Meg Remy, arrives today in the form of In a Poem Unlimited.
A dizzying buffet of live grooves, the 11 songs form a disco Trojan horse for messages of subversion and character studies of women grappling with power. The four previously released singles, ‘MAH’ (‘Mad As Hell’),‘Velvet 4 Sale’, ‘Pearly Gates’ and ‘Rosebud’ were critically lauded, with the latter named Best New Track by Pitchfork. Brought to life by an impressive body of talent – including Toronto collective The Cosmic Range and long-time collaborators Max Turnbull and Louis Percival – In a Poem Unlimited may well be Remy’s most individually distilled protest to date.
Remy will discuss the album and more today via an AMA on Reddit’s /r/indieheads forum taking place at 1pm EST.
For the first time, U.S. Girls will tour as a fervent 7-piece. Beginning in North America next month, and with shows at the upcoming SXSW to be announced, Remy et al will reach Europe in late April, completing their tour in the UK.
In celebration of the new album, Remy hosted the In a Poem Unlimited Van Tour last week, which gave select fans a New York City translation of the universal themes that inspire U.S. Girls’ music. With Remy in the driver’s seat, the tour made stops at infamous sites from the apartment where Norman Mailer stabbed his wife before going on to win two Pulitzer Prizes (‘Velvet 4 Sale’) to the subway grate where Marilyn Monroe was infamously photographed (‘Incidental Boogie’) and the War Resisters League, home to the oldest secular pacifist group in the country (‘MAH’).
