A bright and bouncy blend of Sgt. Pepper-spiked psychedelica and modern, bubbly art-pop.
Rolling Stone AU

Experimental duo Tropical Strength emerge as the latest testament to the NSW Leisure Coast’s knack for fostering some of the country’s best new musical talent, premiering their new single “Let’s Take A Walk” on Rolling Stone AU. Accompanied by a video from director James Kates, “Let’s Take A Walk” conjures up feelings of eerie nostalgia and familiarity, yet all at once with its own peculiar brand of art-damaged pop. The latest signing to Wollongong indie label Farmer & The Owl, Tropical Strength is led by two brother’s, known via their alter-egos of Al Foil and Sir Dinsington, who captured attentions earlier this month with the release of 54 second introductory psych-jam “Sixtle”.

Whilst keen eyes might recognise the brothers for their contributions to other South Coast offerings such as Shining Bird and The Pinheads, Tropical Strength exists as the focus – a passage into the day-to-day visions of chief songwriter Al Foil, drawing on the nostalgia of childhood memories  and surreal happenings of growing up in coastal suburbia. The video for “Let’s Take A Walk” visualises scenes through the warped, sun-drenched lens of raw Super-8 film, filmed in the Wollongong Botanic Gardens,  and the duo’s hometown and surrounds, situated  in a string of suburbs known affectionately as the Coal Coast.

With influences ranging from nursery rhymes and Ozploitation cinema to the novels of Stephen King, “The Strength” utilises a sonic palate which is inspired by the sounds of baroque psychedelia and fuelled by caffeine and anxiety, with “Let’s Take A Walk” the first full taste of their ability to create sonic collages haunted by the past, present and the inner psyche.
