Where are you currently based?
I’m in Perth, Western Australia
How did you first start playing music?
I started learning guitar at Classic Sounds Music School when I was 12 and then slowly transitioned through drums, to piano and then vocals was the thing that stuck.
What’s been happening recently?
A lot! A month ago I actually felt like nothing was happening this year and it now it feels like everything is about to be funnelled into the next few months and I am super excited (and a little nervous) to be busy again.
Your new single ‘Orange and Teal’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Direct song influences for Orange and Teal actually came from Spicy by Ty Dolla $ign and Post Malone as well as Solita by PRETTYMUCH. Those songs were heavy in rotation for me so I sat down one day and produced the beat to feel like them. Song writing wise I really wanted to push my story telling a bit and went in a similar direction to The Call by Backstreet Boys funnily enough. With all those influences together you get Orange and Teal.
How did you go about writing the track?
It was written how most of my tracks are. In my bedroom by myself. I wanted a song thats fun to dance to as well as interesting lyrically. It tells a story of a boy and a girl who were told not to get together but ignore the advice. I ignore a lot of advice like that so the story came pretty natural.
Please tell us how the Cloud Dstrct collab came about?
Me and Cloud Dstrct have been making music together for the past couple years actually, this is just the first song to come out. He just happened to be at the studio the day we were recording it and I asked if he wanted the bridge. The rest is history.
Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
Yung.Cornstarch (aka Tobias) produced the song with help from Adam Ricci and Sheldon Yeoman. Adam Ricci provided the saucy guitars on this beat that I personally think carries the whole song.
Sheldon Yeoman at Levels Studio is my recording and mix engineer and has become such an integral part of my creative process that recording with anyone else feels like a crime.
Dinje also co-mixed as well as mastered the track as well, keeping it in the fam I love you Unc.
How did you approach the recording/production process?
Me and Sheldon have gotten into a really good routine. Every Tuesday I’m go to levels, we watch old Justin Bieber videos (or new ones), he asks me what I want to do for the day and then we wait an hour before I make my way into the booth and record what is most of my catalog.
Please tell us about making music in Perth and the Perth music at the moment:
Perth is really an interesting space to be making music in at the moment, especially if you’re a hip hop artist. Most of the new wave scene has jumped onto this really cool little pop wave with cats like Dinje with ‘Wish I Knew’ and Cloud Dstrct’s last single ‘Watch You Leave’ and I’ve been loving getting to be a part of that.
You have an upcoming mixtape on the way, tell us more:
I DO! 22nd of October I’ll be dropping my 3rd Mixtape ‘I Never Wanted To Get My License (Side A’. It’s a 5 track mixtape with 3 skits that amalgamates the last few years of my life. We’re also planning a launch for it the week before on the 16th of October at the William St. Bird!
What’s planned for the launch event on the 16th of October 2021?
A whole lot of fun. We have one of my favourite line ups I’ve seen, and I am saying that because I got to pick them but that doesn’t make it any less rad. Sunny Flowers is our first live act and last time I got to see Sunny I was so enthralled by the presence and energy that they brought that I knew they would be perfect on the line up. Of course I had to bring my brother Cloud Dstrct on with me as well, me and that man seem to share a lot of line ups and for good reason, we both put on a pretty decent show. Last but definitely not least we have YngRach on the decks because it’s not really a 6K hip hop show if Rach isn’t on the line up.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
To be really honest with you… a lot of Adrian Dzvuke, his new EP is just so listenable. Also loving Dinje’s newest release ‘Wish I Knew’! Away from Perth I’ve recently been listening to a lot of Brackence as well as 1nonly.
What do you like to do away from music?
I actually make rugs when I’m not doing music stuff. I got a tufting gun from Cam Deg last year and it is one of the most therapeutic hobbies I’ve picked up.
What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?
Well since the mixtape on the 22nd is only the Side A, there might be a Side B coming pretty soon after.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
My favourite food ever is my mums Tuna Mornae but my favourite place to eat out would be Short Order in Fremantle, those burgers hit every time.
