Please tell us about your upcoming release for Umor Rex under your birth name Rafael Anton Irisarri?
It comes out August 25 (ROW) / Sept 8 (USA). Here’s the first single, with a video directed by Swedish filmmaker Anders Weberg (better known for Ambiancé: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambiancé).
We hear your playing in Mexico at MUTEK.MX in October, how did this show come about?
The organizers asked me to play.
How is the mixing and producing going for Steve Hauschildt, Forma and The Greatest Hoax?
It’s good. Funtimes at Black Knoll Studio!
How do you find it working with each different artist?
They are all great, otherwise I wouldn’t be working with them.
Your very busy as usual mastering albums at your studio Black Knoll http://www.blackknollstudio.com How did you get into mastering?
What prompted you start your own studio?
I started doing mastering for a few friends like Benoit Pioulard, Loscil and Tiny Vipers, back home in Seattle. After a while more people started to ask me to work on their music, so I set a dedicated studio for it after a few years.
You just completed a remix for Dead Light (UK): http://villagegreenrecording.co.uk/news/dead-light-remixed-ep-out-august-25th please tell us how you usually approach remixes and what you were looking to achieve with this one?
I treat remixes the same way I would work on one of my own tracks.
How is the remix for Hotel Neon going?
It is going well. They liked it.
What are you aiming to do with the track?
Make sound interesting.

We’re excited to here that there is an upcoming 10” EP with Julianna Barwick and yourself for Thesis: how did this collab come about and how are you finding the producing / creative process working with Julianna?
Greg (who runs Thesis) asks us to work together. Julianna came to BKS and we worked on the music over a few days. Big fan of her work.
Please tell us about your latest finished a EP with Leandro Fresco (Kompakt): https://astrangelyisolatedplace.bandcamp.com/album/la-espera what sound / vibe were you aiming for?
70’s prog. Something like ELO meets ELP. I reckon we failed miserably.
How did you find the producing process?
Fun.
Is the finished item what you were expecting to achieve?
Yes.
