What is your name and role with The Oogars?
Hello, Im Tanisha. But Not many people call me that, I Have about 50 nick names. I Play guitar, synth and sing.
Who’s in the band and what instruments do you play?
So Gemma, she shreds on guitar and sings.
Then we’ve got Emily she plays bass, sings and is always the best dressed.
Daniella, she’s our drummer.Slowly trying to get her on a mic as well.
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Gemma, Dani and I are currently based on the southern part of the Gold Coast.Em is Currently living in Byron. The music scene on the goldy is pretty sick. Definitely more on the grunge side of things, a few bigger acts are starting to stop more on the coast now which is cool. Byron is always popping. It defiantly has more diversity in terms of “ music scenes” . Probably because of their music venue infrastructure, allowing bigger bands to play shows there. The Gold Coast is pretty limited when it comes to decent music venues.
How did The Oogars form?
We began our music journey last this year in our garage with little music equipment .Coincidently all of us Ladies individually had the ambition to start a a band, intending to dedicate 2018 to music. By late march I had met Emily through mutual friends at a popular roof top bar in Burleigh. After a couple of margaritas, a lot of music exchanging and sharing we decided we were gonna start a band.
Not long after that
Emily also Met Gemma through mutual friends. Same kinda thing happened at a dinner party. Next minute we were all awkwardly standing in my parents shed ready to make some noise. It was fun, we made one song that is now one of our favourite songs to play in set list. I was initially going to be the drummer. But I wasn’t that good.So we decided to find a new one.I met girl at uni years ago who I knew was cool, surfed and played drums. I contacted her straight away. Then boom we were all again awkwardly standing in her dads lounge room ready for the Oogars first jam.
How was 2018?!
It was a Hoot!
After several months of working hard with our passion, it become a speedy vortex of gigging from Sunshine coast to Byron alongside well known domestic and international bands. We gained an amazing opportunity of supporting Lime Cordiale on their Australian tour. As well as scoring a spot on the Jungle Love music Festival line up.
Unfortunately though, life threw us a dodgy lemon affecting recent opportunities as I, Tanisha broke my C7 in my neck whilst jumping into the ocean one week before our tour…Yeah Heavy haha.
On the bright side The Oogars received an overwhelmingly amount of love and support over my injury. 4 later weeks we were back on stage playing shows neck brace and all. Prior to this we had the privilege to work with Jordan Power from Inky Studios In the hinterland of Byron Bay and recorded a gem of a first single called ‘Scream”. After a solid 10 months of gigging and creating music. Three of us were off to Mexico to surf our brains out and get refreshed and re- inspired for 2019. I obviously had to cancel my trip due to my neck injury but the girls are currently getting plenty fun waves in a quite town called la ticla in mexico.
What do you have planned for 2019?
2019 will be the year of launching of our first single “scream”. With release dates still to be announced. We are dying to get our music out there. The plan for this year is very dependent on how our single goes. But we are aiming to get a slot in a few music festival line ups, support for bigger acts and get back into the studio to then do an EP tour.
We’ve got a few shows still to be announce supporting upcoming Australian and European bands this year. 2019 feels very much like its going to be the foundation for our career as The Oogars.
What have you been working on recently?
Honestly the end of last year was very pushy cancelling shows due to the neck injury and cramming in what we could before the girls scooted off to Mex . Not leaving much room for creativity and writing music. Finalising a solid set list and getting“scream” recoded and mastered was a massive accomplishment for us. We have a bunch of music we want to finalise and record when gem and dani return. In the meantime Emily and I are currently investing a lot of energy into planning our live show performances. We are super passionate about putting on a great show. Tinkering around with that has been fun but challenging considering we’ve only been playing together on stage for 10 months and half of us are on the other side of the world.
What or who influences your sound and songwriting?
I think our sound is very much influenced by our obsession for the ocean, art and surfing. Always gravertating back to surf rock melodies and dreamy harmonies. Just Letting it flow and not really trying to sound or be anyone else. We’re all a pretty frothy bunch, constantly encouraging each other to write and create new things to bring to the table.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
We’ve all have been obsessing over this amazing Amsterdam based Turkish band Altin gun, nice biscuit, the drums, parcels, black out coastal fever, phantastic furniture, Khruangbin, parquet courts and warpaint.
What do you like to do away from music?
Emily is an artist and Graphic designer. So she does a lot of free lancing, painting and hanging out in the bay.
Im just over half way through A natural health science degree. I put it on hold to surf and travel more while slinging coffee’s right opposite the beach .
Dani one of my favourite chick surfers ever, surfs a lot. Also has a side business called ethical balance, a lot of love and time goes into that when she’s off the drums.
If Gemma isn’t shredding on her twin fin somewhere down the coast. She’ll be massaging clients out of some pure bliss centre, Painting, cooking or just hanging out connecting with friends.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
We are all pretty lucky, we live in house’s full of our best friends so hosting Mexican or curry nights is a frequent occurrence. Favourite place would be anywhere with a quite beach and pumping waves . Em is loving Byron bay at the moment so probably some back beach around there.
