We’re the three best friends that anyone could have and we play in The Grogans. It’s Quin Grunden on vocals and guitar, Jordan Lewis on the kit and Angus Vasic on guitar.
We’re based here in Melbourne and play the majority of our gigs down here. The music scene in Melbs is off the hook! So many good bands emerging at the moment and it’s so good to be playing with so many new bands all the time the music scene is so diverse and cool we love it!
How did The Grogans form as a band?
Quin and I (Gus) have been mates since we were little and chubby, we played soccer together. Then Jordy moved to Quins school Sandringham and they started hanging out and playing music together then Quin introduced Jordy and I at a party. We just kicked back together all night and started talking about starting a band and we just said we’ll call ourselves The Grogans which means a turd because we thought we’ll probably be shit and then we just started jamming and getting a few house parties and gigs here and there.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Yeah we went up to Gus’ grandparents place in Ocean Grove in Feb for a bit to record the EP which was heaps of fun! In between takes we’d go out for a skate or surf and a burger from the piping hot chicken shop! Best burgers around! It was pretty casual but we wanted to make sure it was all sounding good and a step up from our last two EP’s which we’re pretty confident it is!
What influences the songwriting and sound for the EP?
A lot of different bands have influenced our sound for this EP but overall i think it’s a very different sound to all our influences and is very much our own kind of sound which we’re really happy about.
How do you usually go about writing music?
We write our songs in different ways each time. A lot of the time one of us brings an idea like a guitar riff or chord progression to the table and then we’ll just expand that idea as a band which I think is really fun because the song has a bit of all of us in it. Other times one of us will just write a whole song and play it for the band and we’ll learn it and play it all together which is really fun. We write songs about heaps of different things, some about people we love, some about people we don’t necessarily like, some about hanging out and some just about nothing. You can’t force writing songs it just has to come to you and flow easily, we don’t get too hung up on writing we just like it to happen naturally.
Your EP launch is at Melbourne’s famous Cherry Bar, what can we expect from the show?
We’re really pumped for the launch!! We don’t really know what to expect ourselves, we just hope that everyone there has a great night and we’re going to do our best and play our hardest to make sure they do. Might even whip the shirts off if you’re lucky.
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 / 2019?
We have a few shows throughout July and August which will be fun ones. We’re playing a couple of shows up at Mount Hotham on the 10th and 11th of August which we can’t wait for! After that Gus is going away for a couple of months but we’re hoping to record a couple more tunes before then that we can release while he’s away. We don’t have anything planned for next year but hopefully it’s bigger and better than this year! Maybe organise a few shows up the coast would be fun.
What do you like to do outside of music?
Outside of music we like to just hangout when we can and go skating and beat the shit out of Quin.
