What is your name and role within the band?
My name is Nicole Springer. I am the singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the group.
How did you start?
I had been in bands previously and found that I really, REALLY wanted to sing and write song arrangements with strings. I found the right people with the same passion as mine and from there we started making music that felt very thoughtful and inspired.
Where are you based?
We are based in Kansas City, MO, USA.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Sometimes a song is inspired by something that has happened in my life recently. Other times, I just let words and notes come out as they may. Every song has been written under different circumstances. Songwriting is unpredictable but that makes it all the more interesting.
What are you working on right now?
We just finished our debut EP, A Beginner’s Guide to The Good Hearts, and we’re playing some local festivals soon. We’ll see where the music takes us fro there.
What is your gear setup?
Our setup is pretty simple: acoustic guitar, violin, cello, and cajon. It’s raw and stripped down.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
Outside of music, we all have our jobs, a few of us actually work as teachers with music. I am a huge fan of film and one of our songs is inspired by the documentary Grey Gardens. The things we do and love outside of music certainly make differences in how we write and feel our music.
How would you describe your music genre?
We are kind of difficult to pinpoint. I call us a string based folk-pop band with touches of soul, old country, and reggae.
Do you know any music theory?
We all know enough of it but Anna, our cellist, and Aaron, our percussionist, are the real experts.
What are your plans for the future?
We’re taking it day by day and letting life reveal where we should go next. Right now the only plan is to enjoy making and sharing music.
How did you get into music?
I have been singing since I was 4 years old. I’ve been into for as long as I can remember anything. It’s my truest passion.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m actually listening to Simple Song by The Shins at the moment but I also listen to a lot of old school doo wop and Motown.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
I would say Janis Joplin, Judy Garland, Alanis Morisette, Brian Wilson, and Ben Folds.
When are you playing next?
We’re playing twice this week: Tomorrow at Knuckleheads and Saturday at the Westport Roots Fest, both in Kansas City.
Please feel free to include any extra info.
Our debut EP will be released on Monday, June 12th, on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, and can be found on our website too!
