It’s always a special occasion when well-known artists collaborate on music together for the first time, as often the outcome is a unique blend of styles. So we felt compelled to check out the debut collaboration between Davide Squillace and Basti Grub.
In this instance the guys already have similarities to the core of what makes up their individual styles of tech house, but coming together they seem to have brought out the best of each other.
Davide Squillace achieved global recognition for his residency at Ibiza’s legendary DC10, as playing to holidaymaking clubbers from all over the world meant he got to make new fans who went home to spread word of his talents.
Basti Grub is someone who like Davide, has a charismatic style centred round trippy vocals and percussive grooves, but made a name for himself as a producer before many people discovered him as a DJ.
This And That Lab is a label headed up by Davide Squillace and many times already Basti Grub has released music on the imprint, so perhaps it was always inevitable that someday this collaboration would come to fruition.
Most notable on the two tracks are the sleazy seductive vocals that have a smooth and chic quality to their captivating tones. Throbbing synths and bursts of white noise also add to the character, but it’s the tribal style percussion that puts the artists trademark styles on the tracks.
