Music Interviews

LA JUNGLE

by the partae June 2, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

Reggie : I play drums. And sweat. A lot. Even when it’s cold.
Jim : I play guitar, voice, and a tiny keyboard.

How did you start?

Reggie : We created a concert collective five years ago, Dewane Collective. We organised something like 40 gigs in Mons, our hometown. We do not have so much time and concert place in this town anymore. And we focused more on the band for the last 3 years.

Where are you based?

Reggie : Mons, Brussels and Charleroi. Three really different towns, but really close from each others. Weird belgian fact.
Jim : I used to live in Brussels, now it’s in Mons.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Reggie : I bring a drum pattern or Mat brings a loop. We try to create something around this. Sometimes noisy, sometimes dancy. We play, we try stuffs, sometimes really bad and dissonant stuffs, we stop, talk, try again, we argue, try again, stop, play again, record it on our little Zoom, listen, cut, paste, play again.. Most of the time, we trash it because when we listen to it the next day, we call each other and say : « What a boring stuff. » Haha !
Jim : Also, when the good riff comes, the writing process can be really fast.

What are you working on right now?

Reggie : We are about to release something new with others bands, but we don’t know when. Nothing more to say for the moment. Wait and see ! (Uk band inside !)
Jim : We’re starting to compose for a new album too.

What is your gear setup?

Reggie : I play on a mix of acrylic and maple drum kit. Really dirty kit and cymbals because of tours and gigs. Not sounds so good but that’s not the purpose, so.. don’t care.
Jim : I play on  three wooden guitare, telecaster shaped. Made by an artisan. Unique piece.

Orange Rockerverb 100 amp with 4×12 Orange box. A peavey Mark bass with 8×10 ampeg box. A looper, delay, 8bit, reverb, octaver. And a toy, the tiny Casiotone. Bip bip !

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

Reggie : I’m watching the 3nd season of Fargo with my girlfriend (blast!), I practice rudiments on a little pad 30′ minutes everyday, try hypnosis sessions, work in a cultural center and love eatin’ dry figs.
Jim : I draw, I paint, I do some serigraphy too. It’s all connected with music.

How would you describe your music genre?

Reggie : noisy rock with disco sauce
Jim : Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam Bam ….

Do you know any music theory?

Reggie : I forgot I think. And didn’t achieve music school I started when I was a teen. Boring hours, waste of time and energy. Kids, if you want to play rock’n’roll, learn with a teacher (a good one matters!) BUT please learn mainly by yourself in your bedroom after school hours. Listen the music you like, watch videos on youtube, do covers and improve yourself everyday.
Jim : No. Just learned by myself.

What are your plans for the future?

Reggie : I really hope we will find time and personal ressources to create and release a new album in 2018/2019.
Jim : Yeah an new album and new videos ! New horizons to meet new people.

How did you get into music?

Reggie : My parents proposed me to learn an instrument when I was 10. Free choice. So, I answered : «ok, drums ». My father though that would last a year.. haha!
Jim : Nirvana I guess 😉

What are you listening to at the moment?

Reggie : I just discovered « Harmless Melodies » by Yellow Days.. and this is strictly delicious. We also listened twice the new Sleaford Mods album in the van this weekend. No baaaaaad ! And, to conclude, we played with Thee Oh Sees two weeks ago, and I recomand the powerful « A Weird Exist » album!
Jim : In Zaïre, Sleaford Mods, Doomsday Student, ESG, and disco music.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Reggie : My mum, my girlfriend, Zach Hill, Brian Chippendale and falafel!
Jim : My brothers, The Blood brothers, The Jesus Lizard,  Leonard Cohen, and Gros Rose!

When are you playing next?

Reggie : Boomtown Festival, Lokerse Feesten, Out Loud Festival in Belgium. Many other fests in Germany, Holland, France, Belgium and Switzerland this summer. I’m so excited!!
Jim : Yep.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

Reggie : We played our first UK gigs last month in London, Brighton and The Great Escape Festival. Amazing experience ! Hope to be back soon 😉
Jim : Thank you for your interest.
