HANDSOME releases new single + video ‘No Cowards’

written by the partae
Remote Control Records and Dot Dash Recordings are excited to share brand new single and video from HANDSOME, titled ‘No Cowards’. Today she also announces her debut EP No Hat No Play will be released on Friday 21 September. Catch HANDSOME celebrate the release with a tour over September and October, including debut BIGSOUND showcases. Full tour details can be found below.

It has been a whirlwind year of growth for HANDSOME, introducing herself in late 2017 with her debut single ‘Late Night Ball Game feat. Joyride’, it was quickly received as an indie queer anthem that struck a chord with many.

HANDSOME followed up in early 2018 with her second single ‘Save Some Love’. Described by LNWYas “Stunningly vulnerable” and Pilerats as “Elegant, uplifting and jaw dropping”, the song was premiered on triple j, and found itself championed by community radio across Australia, officially added to double j,and spun on KEXP (Seattle).

“The title is a rule that we all grew up with in Australia, that was a playful way of reminding children of the dangers of the sun, and the damage that can be caused if you don’t cover up your skin. Not that I defy this rule – but it carries a certain agenda with it that cannot be ignored, and that is that simply older generations know better.

I started HANDSOME to question this entirely, and No Hat No Play explores this in depth.”

She continues, “I feel like the world is having a moment of celebrating one’s self-expression, it is powerful at this time to be yourself and I guess this also comes at a time when I know myself better than ever. It took time for me to know who was, and now its here I want to do whatever I can to encourage and support others to be brave and proud of who they are through my music.”

HANDSOME welcome’s the growing visibility of queerness in music and art, saying “now more than ever the expression of sexuality in music is loud, proud and admired as a strength… its about time, isn’t it? I feel so privileged to write and produce music that celebrates a community I feel so grateful for.”

The new video for ‘No Cowards’, embodies all of this with its vibrant, joyful and defiant feels. The celebration of self-expression beams with every wry smile, every swift movement and every playful cut.

HANDSOME shares new single ‘Save Some Love’

written by the partae
HANDSOME today shares a brand new single, ‘Save Some Love‘ via Dot Dash Recordings. Premiering last night on triple j’s Home & Hosed with Declan Byrne, ‘Save Some Love‘ is the second single fromHANDSOME since her emotive debut, ‘Late Night Ball Game feat. Joyride.’

Of the track, HANDSOME details, “‘Save Some Love’ is a reminder to love yourself. We allow ourselves too often to give all of our energy, positivity and love out to other people, we often for get to leave a little for ourselves. This song has many different stories to it, many heroines that I have met in my life that have done and said things that have reminded me how important self-love and authenticity truly is.”

The bare bones of the song were written in a little studio in Sydney with Benjanmin Fletcher (Marina and The Diamonds) and David Hunt (Sarah Blasko), and after creating more than 10 final versions of the song, HANDSOME settled proudly on the one you hear today.

Sydney-based HANDSOME is a new artist, crafting a mix of tomboy pop and brooding electronica. The bold and new sounds herald a celebration of self-expression and carefree creativity, whilst still being accompanied by obsessive perfection. The name HANDSOME is a nod to her queer identity and is inspired by her strong friendships, falling in love, kissing girls and rolling your eyes at people who have opinions on who you should be. HANDSOME is a statement of defiance.

With more music under her belt, there is much to come for this adventurous new artist in 2018.

Introducing HANDSOME + new single and video ‘Late Night Ball Game’

Remote Control Records are thrilled to announce the signing of HANDSOME to Dot Dash Recordings. The announcement comes with the release of a new single and video for ‘Late Night Ball Game feat. Joyride,’ premiered last night on Home & Hosed on triple j and lifted from an EP entitled No Hat No Play coming early 2018.

Crafting music mostly in home studios around NSW, HANDSOME has a knack for the DIY. Working with artists and writers with strong pop sensibilities and then taking the songs into their final chapters, she plays with unique aural aesthetics to achieve something distinctive and brand new.
Collaborations with artists such as Joyride, Jonny Took (DMA’s), Benjamin Fletcher and David Hunt (Marina & The Diamonds, Sarah Blasko), Jayteehazard and more, have given the project its first start – with many more collaborations to come.

On new single ‘Late Night Ball Game’ HANDSOME shares:

“A little over a year and a half ago, Joyride and I pieced this song together. ‘Late Night Ball Game’ is a song that is so close to my heart because it so captures what it is like to be stuck in your own head when you’re deeply worried about having to reveal a secret to someone you love. It follows the story of a person coming out to their friends, their family, their loved ones. A story that often reflects turmoil, and hurt and pain. Why do we instil fear in our young ones who are simply wanting to reveal who they truly are?

The fact that this song was written over a year ago and finds itself so relevant at this very moment speaks volumes. The saddest thing about this debate and what really resonates in this song in my opinion, is that their is a huge power held in the hands of those that we need acceptance from – our families, our friends – and now that power has been given to the Australian public.

The clip follows 5 friends, representative of the closeness of the queer community. They bring each other strength, support and the power to be themselves – despite what the world throws at them. In a series of narratives, the video wades through real experiences. The build aims to resolve these tales, and even though some of their truths are hard to swallow, there is a sense of release.

All the key characters in the clip identify as queer themselves, and indeed endured formidable moments playing their parts, but did so with the conviction of empowering others. We wanted to make something that was bold and authentic, and left the viewer with a simple question… why would you put a person through this?”

HANDSOME has seen previous success under the moniker Caitlin Park, garnering critical acclaim, winning the SOYA award in 2013, landing a nomination for the Australian Music Prize in 2014, and playing shows with the likes of First Aid Kit, SOAK, James Vincent McMorrow, Courtney Barnett, The Japanese House and more.
