Simon Imrei is proud to announce the release of a brand-new single, Stand Still and a special launch show, Saturday May 18th at the Merri Creek Tavern in Northcote.
Stand Still is the first new music since Simon’s two-part sophomore album The Sum of Scenes, released last year to wide acclaim. The song came together after Simon won the ‘2018 Band Prize’ of a day of free studio time at Head Gap Studios in Preston, as part of the Triple R ‘Radiothon’. A longtime supporter of RRR and community radio in general, it was a welcome surprise and opportunity to discover a new studio space, to work with Rohan Sforcina (Ali Barter, Oh Mercy, Fraser A Gorman) and a chance to approach the recording process a little differently.
Having spent his teen years following in his great Uncle’s footsteps playing drums and fostering a love for rhythm and groove, Simon later went on to embrace songwriting and the mixture of bluesy guitar and acoustic folk finger-picking he has enjoyed ever since. Along the way, in studio sessions and during his time playing in Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes and The Basics, Simon tried his hand at keyboard and bass guitar, so when it came to recording Stand Still, he decided to issue himself a challenge.
“I kind of thought, well… you came into this project unexpectedly through the RRR prize, so why not keep yourself outside your comfort zone, just to see what happens?”, Simon remembers. “As a songwriter, you often write music with an eye on the arrangements, then get the band together to flesh it out in the studio. I decided to work with Rohan one-on-one and play (almost every) track myself, figuring it out as we went. It was a really unique experience and a credit to Rohan for having the ‘overall’ vision & holding it all together.
The result of that experiment was Stand Still, a melancholy Americana daydream about heading down the coast with someone, living out of an old suitcase and sharing the quiet in amongst the craziness of life’s day to day. It’s a subtle acoustic folk-pop tune, tinged with vintage tape tones and the deft finishing touches of guitarist/pedal-steel gun for hire Matt Dixon (Emilee South, James Kenyon).
Stand Still is the first offering from a new EP to be released later in the year. Simon will be launching the single with his acoustic band at the Merri Creek Tavern on Saturday May 18th, with special guests Louie & The Pride.
