We chatted with Canadian producer Simon Doty around his ‘Party with a Purpose’ track release on Gorgon City’s Realm Records, which is already receiving strong support from radio tastemakers and top tier DJs. Following on from the success of his earlier releases this year on Anjunadeep and Knee Deep In Sound, Doty is really carving a spot for himself as one of the most exciting talents on the circuit right now. He’s currently in the middle of a North American tour, hitting San Francisco, LA, NYC, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal.
Hey Simon, thanks for chatting with us! Where are we catching you today?
Hey! thanks for having me, I’m on the road at the moment, it’s a busy few weeks for shows. I’ll be in Las Vegas, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal and New York.
You’ve just released your brilliant ‘Party with a Purpose’ on Realm Records. This is an exciting one for you, with the label being ran by UK house stalwarts Gorgon City – how does it feel expanding in different territories like this with your music?
Ya they are certainly very popular at the moment and I really like what they do so I think it’s a great time to be working together on this release. They do hit a bit of a different market than my typical crowd and it’s always great to be broadening your horizons a bit.
Tell us a bit about the new release – where did you write it, was it a product of lockdown?
I probably made it about 6 months ago, I always wanted to use the vocal sample as I’m a huge 80’s and 90’s hip hop fan. It came together super quickly, it’s definitely a dancefloor oriented track.
You’ve dropped so much new music this year, including several on Anjunadeep. You’ve got such a strong relationship with the label, having released several EPs and remixes there even just in the last year – how did the relationship start with them?
Anjuadeep really liked a track I did called ‘Dawn’ on Eelke Kleijn’s Days Like Nights Label. After that they wanted to hear more music from me, and I met with them a couple times. The relationship has been great ever since and I’ve been sending them lots more music.
If you had to pick a favourite track out of all your releases this year on Anjuna, Knee Deep and beyond, which would you pick (Can you pick?!)
It’s pretty hard to choose a favourite but if I was to choose one I would probably say ‘Solaris’. It really represents the sound and style that I’m all about and has a wide range of DJs playing it.
It’s been a weird year for everyone, but what have been some of your highlights?
I think the bonus has been that I’ve been able to spend a lot more time with friends and family this year. I’ve also been lucky enough to squeeze some shows in still here and there despite the pandemic.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learnt this year?
I think just to be grateful for all the things we do have and there’s a lot more to life than just music and shows. It can be taken away at any point in time as we have seen from the pandemic so make sure you have more going on in life than just that!
What is coming next for you, any other special releases on the horizon?
After the Realm release, I have a couple remixes out in the Fall as well as a special EP out later in the year on Anjunadeep.
