Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
I’m currently based in London, where I live in close proximity to some really exciting spaces and music venues. There is so much music happening here it’d be hard to explain a general scene and list everything, but there’s definitely a commitment to DIY and people are keen to make stuff happen.
How did you first start making music?
As soon as I had access to a computer I tried to make music. I remember finding an old educational copy of Logic express at school and trying to conjure beats and writing melodies on the computer keyboard. Frustratingly, my mums computer never had enough RAM to make a clean bounce of the tracks so sadly I’ll never be able to reflect upon these compositions !
You recently released Cellex Lobe EP on Bass Agenda, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this EP?
Since the EP was written as a dedication to a friend, I had a pretty clear idea of the sound before getting to work. I knew I wanted to reflect upon some of the experiences I’d had at the Electric Sweat nights and I wanted to draw upon the composition of Nacho’s djing and bring it into the tracks.
These parties would usually be a sturdy 9/10 hours of electro, drifting from new stuff coming out of the UK and older bits from The Hague and Detroit with lots of acid in between – I guess the EP sticks to some of the formulas celebrated in these records in terms of the programming of the drums and synths.
How did you go about writing the music for Cellex Lobe?
I started writing the EP whilst I was living in Berlin and at a point when I was missing the music happening in London and my friends who were putting stuff on. In Berlin I conceived the first half of the EP before taking a months break from the writing. In that time friends of mine played out the tracks and I got a chance to re-evaluate some things and get a bit of feedback on the music.
The other two tracks were written in an intense week whilst back in London having sold most of my synths so I could travel back to London from Berlin !
Where and when did you record/produce and who with?
The EP was written alone, except when I’d ask for advice from my partner about certain sounds and things like that. I’d have my gear set up in a little room in the roof of the house and I’d usually start work on the tunes when it was still and quiet at night.
What programs/instruments/equipment did you use and why?
The EP features Nanozwerg heavily as its my most favourite synth ever. There a couple of tracks where Nano is doing most things. There’s also lots of bits of gear I’d get hold of in swaps whilst in Berlin and just spend a day tweaking and recording with, so the actual sound sources in the tracks are from all over. My voice is also in there too mostly in vocoder form.
How and why did you come to release with Bass Agenda?
I’ve been a fan of Bass Agenda for a while and the radio show was highly important in my formative years of making electronic music. I’ve listened to every podcast online and was stoked when it became regular on Deep Space Radio. I really admire Andy’s approach and dedication with Bass Agenda and I leaped at the chance to have my music on the label.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve not been buying many new records recently, although I’ve been rinsing the most recent Stilleben releases as usual. I was playing lots of early 2000’s stuff on Over-X-Posure at the time of making the EP and I recently got hold of some of my favourite World Electric releases from Chromatix and Bolz Bolz also.
I’m also pretty locked into a few really exciting people regularly putting stuff on Soundcloud. Go check out R 325 and the User 338750207 and user979318782● accounts.
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019 going into 2020?
I’ve got a couple of shows coming up in London before the new year and lots of music to finish as always. Next up is a track I’ve got coming out on a compilation CD on Infant Tree and I’m also tweaking a split with Kalli on his Permanent Repetitive Language label which I’m really excited for.
