Brisbane alt-rockers Semantics are absolutely thrilled to announce they’ve signed to SideOneDummy Records. Alongside the news arrives their new single, “Sleep At Night”, which the band will take on tour down the East Coast later this month.
Combining the energy of Luca Brasi with the emotion of Title Fight and the musicality of PUP, “Sleep At Night” is brought to life by Callum Robinson’s warm Aussie vocals that hug soul as the track blossoms with its addictive punk rock spirit and huge singalongs. An understanding exploration of vices that help bear the load when you’re awake at 3am, “Sleep At Night” is like a reassuring friend at the end of the phone line happy to sit in silence for a bit, then offer a gentle nudge in the right direction.
“’Sleep at Night’ is a ‘pick your poison’ kind of song,” explains Robinson. “Everybody has a crutch and needs a little help getting through each day. It’s no one else’s place to judge your coping mechanisms, but it’s imperative that you’re self aware and don’t dig yourself a deeper hole.”

As Pileratsrightfully pointed out, “if you’ve been keeping an eye on the swelling next generation of Australia’s punk rock world, then Semantics may be an act already on your radar”. Since Semantics came together in 2017, the four-piece have spread joy on and off the stage as they bring awareness to mental health through all-consuming songs that light up mosh pits and remind you to check in on your mum.
With two EPs to their name, it was their single “Drunk” that really put the band on the radar, landing them a coveted spot on the triple j Unearthed stage at BIGSOUND 2019. In their short time together, they’ve also impressively played shows with Violent Soho, The Menzingers, WAAX, Dune Rats and most recently wrapped up a sold out tour with Sly Withers and Columbus while a pandemic raged on in the background.
“Sleep At Night” marks the start of the next chapter for Semantics as they join the SideOneDummy Records family where they will release their debut album in 2022. The revered LA-based label has a history of signing great Australian acts like Violent Soho, The Smith Street Band and Xavier Rudd and Semantics will be right at home amongst their idols.
“We’re all huge fans of the label and the work they’ve put behind some of our favourite debuts. Can’t believe our luck becoming part of this legacy!” says Robinson.
Thomas Dreux and Phil Bender-Simon of SideOneDummy Records add: “We’re thrilled to be working with Semantics. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with the music when we came across it earlier this year. They are a super talented group, with amazing songwriting that absolutely blew us away! We’re excited to release ‘Sleep at Night’ and announce the signing, and we are all looking forward to what’s coming next!”
