Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
I am based in Melbourne, Victoria, I’ve been living here for the past 2 years and I absolutely love it!
Melbourne has an incredible live scene which I believe is one of the biggest in the world. The Australian music industry in general has great potential with a stack of incredible talents!
How did you first start playing music?
I was 5, my uncles were musicians at the time and were rehearsing for a show in their studio in France. Next minute I was holding the microphone and I was performing as the opening act of their gigs.
Please tell us about your background and why you decided to move to Australia:
I was born and raised in France in a place we call the “city of love”: Paris. My parents come from Spanish and Moroccan background. When I was just a child, I used to hear Spanish, Arabic and French in my world… I could never thank them enough for giving such a multicultural childhood!
I’ve also always been fascinated by English music, culture and language. After spending a few months in the United States, I decided to join one of my best friends on a trip to Australia which was supposed to only be for 6 months and here I am now totally in love with this beautiful country.
What have you been working on recently?
This is top secret! Haha just kidding
I’ve been working on my EP “Inspire” with my label Inspire Music. My goal hasn’t changed, I always want to inspire all music fans and artists through my music and my productions… and I think the title speaks for itself !
I’ve also been working a lot on myself, on my body and on my mind, my thoughts. Your mind is the most powerful tool you have to face every day’s challenge and if you learn the art of listening to it, you’ll become more aware of how to use it ! I think it’s really important in Music, especially when it comes to writing, find inspirations and learning to appreciate criticism… meditation is the key !
You have a new single out now called ‘#Greenlights’ – what or who influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
First of all, performers such as Drake, Justin Timberlake, Craig David and recently Khalid, are big influences for me, and I hope it reflected well in my music!
Regarding “#GreenLights” As you might know, I’ve been working with a French music producer called “Nate” for about 7 years now.
He called me a few months ago super excited about this track he produced. I could feel the energy and the excitement even through the phone. After listening to the instrumental and the beats, the melodies started flowing.
I’ve had a lot of people compared it to “Chainsmokers” type of sound (especially the drop part)… Personally I like to think that every melody and artist is unique, and has its own way to do things… so if I had to compare it, I would probably say I got inspired by my previous tracks that I produced with “Nate” such as “Over Yah”, or “Love Seasons” from my previous EP “Future Vision” (that you can find on Spotify or Soundcloud, if I can do a little bit of advertisement haha).
How did you go about writing “#Greenlights”
My music is always influenced by what I experience in my life… it could be a personal situation, some stories shared by people around me, what I’m dreaming about, etc. Basically, everything that I feel inspiring to me.
Recently one of my closest friends got engaged after 5 years of relationship. The way he was describing his future wife felt like the first time he met her. From this story #GreenLights came to life.
Why Green Lights? I was writing the song sitting in front of a bridge that had amazing green lights hahaha How original is that? It might not be inspiring for you, but that moment felt special for me, the only thing I had to do then was to find how to transmit that feeling!
How do you usually write music?
Whenever I feel ideas coming up, I sit down in front of my laptop and let the energy flow. Like I said, I also love meditating. It’s often after a 15 minutes meditation session that I find most of my ideas.
However, I never enter into meditation with the aim of finding new lyrics, I just let my mind rest and observe it. I guess it allows me to find a focus and a special energy to write new songs.
You must think I’m weird now (haha) !
Where and when did you record/produce?
We produced, wrote and recorded the song in February right after the release of my first project with Inspire Music called “Acuerdate” (a Latino/Rn’B track).
Most of the voices and some instruments on “#GreenLights” are recorded in my home studio in Dockland. I have a view on the Yarra River and I find the view really inspiring!
The rest, is produced by “Nate” from France. (For my Australian audience, I won’t say that the track is “Made in France”).
What programs/equipment did you use?
I’m using Logic Pro X and Ableton Live. For the mixing part, our sound engineer (@Panorama_mastering) is using Pro Tools.
Everything I need like microphones, interfaces, speakers, keyboards are available in my home studio.
What do you like to do away from music?
On top of spirituality and meditations, I have two other passions, Travel and Fashion, but the last one is probably because I come from Paris (haha). I love travelling because I’m super curious. This pluricultural childhood probably gave me a thirst for discovery of other culture and languages.
Finally, I do a lot of sports and read a lot. Weirdly, I read a lot about business but also books that talk about state of mind. For instance, I currently read “The Power of now” by Eckhart Toll, an excellent book that teaches you about living in the moment.
I also go to the gym once a day… alright, “I TRY TO” go to the gym once a day (haha).
Who are you listening to at the moment?
One of my favourite tracks at the moment is called “Love Riddim” by Rotimi.
But lastly, I’ve been listening a lot to Khalid and his last album “Free Spirit” (which I think is the most promising Rn’B artist).
I’m also listening a lot to my mom asking me if I’m alright and when I’m coming back to France (haha).
Where and when are you playing next?
We will organise a launch party in a couple of days at this crazy place in North Melbourne called “The Third Day”! So stay tuned on my Instagram!
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2019?
The EP is about to be finished and will be released in the next few months.
I’ve already started working on my next album that will follow up probably end of 2019/ beginning of 2020.
We are also looking with the label to a few super talented Rn’B and pop artists in Melbourne that we’d like to sign under “Inspire Music”.
Finally, I’m planning to go back to France in mid-August, but don’t tell my mom please.
Any secrets that you care to share?
The album will feature 1 major international artist. That’s all I can say.
Also, I’m about to turn vegetarian, but only in Australia… My mom’s tajine (a Maroccan dish with meat) is way too good for me to turn Vegetarian !
Is there a secret formula to succeed in the music industry?
Love is the key. If you do what you’re attracting about and passionate about, you will succeed. So listen to your feelings it’s that simple !
I’ll tell you what, I read once that “you need to leave something you’ve done with your hand on this earth before you go away”… wether it’s a garden, a house, a wooden horse, it must be something your soul can come back and connect to when you fly away.
I decide it would be music.
How has the music scene changed since you first started?
It changed a lot! When I started, Music was all about radio plays and TV shows.
Nowadays, social media is basically what runs music. It gives more chances to independent artists to succeed without the support of major labels.
A simple video on Facebook or Instagram can make anyone blows up !
Favourite food and place to hangout?
My favourite food is my mom’s dishes to be honest, she makes the best couscous in the planet… you should definitely try it!
My favourite place to hangout is my studio. One day, I spent 17 hours in it… my roommate even brought me my dinner ^^
Even when I’m not making music I find it really peaceful to hang there.
I also love doing team meetings at a cafe next to my place called “D.G.Expresso” or at “The Third Day”. Best place and they do really nice coffee !
