Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
I’m based in Sydney & the music scene as you likely know has been better in the past. There’s still some cool shows and warehouse party’s though. Good music is still being made here too
How did you first start playing music?
My dad always had a lot of guitars around the house growing up. I used to try and play them when i was young but only recently started taking it a bit “serious”
What’s been happening recently?
A few things happening lately – I’ve just released the first song under my new name, we finished shooting the music video for it yesterday with some friends,
finishing off the next songs now, some planning for the new year ahead & I recently just got a drum kit so I’ve been playing that alot
Please tell us about your name change and how and why the change came about:
I was at a cross roads creatively for a long time trying to work out what to create because I was making music I would never listen to, I was listening to music that was almost the complete opposite to what I’d made previously, It didn’t make sense and lacked substance to me. After a lot of conversations with myself I got more confident in writing/singing songs myself which led me to realise this new direction was where I felt the most comfortable. Expressing more of myself seems like the right way to go with art, i guess?
Who are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of post punk from the late 70s/Early 80s. Bands like Joy Division, Television, The Cure. Also some modern artists like Alex G, King Krule, The Voidz, Yves Tumor, The 1975, Radiohead, Jadu Heart, Bon Iver, The Strokes
What do you like to do away from music?
I love skateboarding through the city with friends and finding places I’ve never been to before. Also enjoy photographing things I see while doing that
You have a new single out, what’s the title?
Just Be Over
What influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
When I made it I was obsessed with the idea of blending psychedelic sounds with pop music
Where and when did you record/produce and who with?
I produced it back in 2016, in my bedroom. The vocals are from a friend in a band called Haiva Ru which as based in Santa barbara, California.
How was the recording experience and what did you find most rewarding during the creation process?
It was really fun, experimenting with different genres I like and trying to get them to sit with each other was rewarding when it started to work. Seeing an idea once from my head be transformed into a song is always really rewarding. The vocal performance still gives me chills too.
What have been some of the highlights of your musical career so far?
Seeing my older songs connect with so many people across so many countries has been so nice. Also my progress to being comfortable singing and songwriting myself has been an internal highlight
Please tell us what we can expect from a Riley From Earth show:
It’s going to be a live 3 piece band. I want to create an atmosphere with the set design and visuals to make the audience feel comfy. I’m going to be singing and playing guitars/synths which is terrifying but I cant wait.
What’s planned for 2020?
hopefully write some really good songs, release a few more singles, an EP, play the first few shows, quality content, hopefully make some nice meals, more music videos, I need to buy some more pot plants too
Favourite food and place to hangout?
A good friend has a pizza restaurant called Cranzgots.
The “Jafrica” (with prawn) does great things
