PEANESS

by the partae

What is your name and role within Peaness?

I’m Rach and I’m the drummer- there’s also Jess (vocals and bass) and Balla (vocals and guitar) 🙂

How did you start?

We started just after I finished uni, we used to practice in my old student accomodation- after I left I went away for a bit but we started the band properly in 2015.

Where are you based?

Chester, UK.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

It varies a lot but an example would be one of us comes to a rehearsal with an idea for a chord structure or a riff and we work on it together to write the instrumentation for the song first and add the melody and lyrics on after.

What are you working on right now?

Writing new songs for the next EP/album!

What is your gear setup?

I have a Pearl vision kit with Remo coated heads, and shitty Zildjian ZBT’s! Need to invest in better cymbals soon!

Jess plays a squire short scale jag, pedal wise, I just use a big muff. Balla has a Fender and has a super cool new pedal called a shaker which sounds super cool, can’t wait to start using it with our new tunes

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I personally love to travel- am off to Thailand this September and can’t wait! I am influenced by some samba and latin american rhythms with drumming but never actually been there haha. Jess recently went to Japan and we’ve named one of our new songs “Kaizen” which is Japanese for ‘change for better’ so I suppose we’re kiiiind of influenced by that.

How would you describe your music genre?

Fuzzy poppy indie.

Do you know any music theory?

I know theory for my instrument pretty well but not for much else haha. The other 2 are all over their harmonies.

What are your plans for the future?

Just to keep enjoying what we do first and foremost, would love to get on a tour and be able to travel outside the UK with it as well.

How did you get into music?

I grew up listening to music all the time, and when I was 12/13 I started learning the drums after listening to American Idiot haha.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Not exactly new but I’ve re discovered Fleetwood Mac recently and they haven’t been off!

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

As a band, I’d say Courtney Barnett, Margaret Glassy, Death From Above 1979, Biffy Clyro andddd the 5th one is hard, so you can have 4.

When are you playing next?

Telfords Warehouse which is our favourite place in Chester on June 23rd.
