outfit

Where are you currently based?

We are based in Melbourne, Australia!

How did outfit form?

During lockdown last year the three of us were spread out all over the globe, Tim in  Melbourne, Cam in London and Ben in Perth. We started video calling each other just for company and to  hang out, and then quickly had the idea to do some songwriting with each other for fun over zoom! We liked  what we heard so we decided to all link up in Melbourne in late 2020/early 2021 to form outfit!

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve all been keeping busy during lockdown in Melbourne the second  half of this year. Tim and Cam have been busy working on some new KPOP material and whilst in lockdown  we’ve been catching the Manchester United games over zoom.

Your new single ‘Sunny’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The whole lyrical  concept of ‘sunny’ sparked from Tim’s experience of going through the first rounds of lockdown in 2020 and  the cyclical nature of day to day life at the time. Life seemed to be standing still and we just needed a light at  the end of the tunnel to look forward to.

What does Sunny mean to you?

To us ‘sunny’ is all about the issues that come with dealing with your  mental health and finding comfort in the people that you have around you. Keeping open conversations with  your friends and people close to you about where you’re at and what you need to move forward although  hard, is super important to keep on top of.

How did you go about writing Sunny?

The three of us were hanging out one day early this year and Ben  started playing this random chord progression on the guitar that he calls his “elevator progression”. It started  off as a joke, but then we tweaked it a bit and came up with the progression that is now ‘sunny’. Later that  night Tim and Cam produced the track which then led on to Tim writing the vocals, then ‘sunny’ (in it’s demo  form) was complete!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

After we had our initial writing/recording  session in Tims old studio, we were in the middle of moving houses so the demo sat there for a couple of  weeks until Tim and Cam set up their new studio. Tim then mixed and added the final production tweaks to  the track in the new studio before we sent it off to Randy Merrill from Sterling Sound to have it mastered!

How did you approach the recording process?

Recording ‘sunny’ was probably the quickest part of the  whole process! After Ben first came up with the chords on the couch that afternoon, Tim and Cam then  worked on the initial production demo that evening. All vocals were then recorded over the next few days so  the recording part of the process happened quickly and very close together. This was all before the studio  move took place and before the production/mixing/mastering happened. Because we were all pumped on  the initial idea of the song the writing and recording of the first demo took place very quickly!

What programs/instruments did you use?

We love using Cubase for our productions and ‘sunny’ was no  different! Cam’s blue fender telecaster has become the outfit guitar which combined with the RC-20 Retro  Color plug-in gives a nice lofi wobble.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

A few of our fave artists at the moment include HONNE, Silk  Sonic, FKJ and San Joseph who is a friend of ours also based in Melbourne! We’re massive KPOP fans as  well, and have been really into a few releases lately such as NCT 127’s new album Sticker and aespa’s new  album Savage.

What do you like to do away from music?

Ben and Tim both love football (soccer) and love watching a  Manchester United game over a case of beer and a healthy serving of domino’s. Cam doesn’t really enjoy it  but will hang out anyway to avoid getting FOMO.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

We’re so happy to finally be able to share our  first single, so going into 2022 we’re gearing up for our second single to then be followed by an EP!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We love Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya in Fitzroy for some high quality  Japanese food! We all went there for Ben and Cam’s joint birthday celebrations earlier in the year!
