What is your name and role within Nomenklatur?
As you probably know, Nomenklatür is a french duet formed by Olivier Brucker influenced by the EBM scene and Olivier ROSSI alias Labinsect much more influenced by the techno scene.
Olivier Brucker alias Mitch brings some fresh ideas created in his own studio or during his travels whereas Labinsect makes some sound research in the Nomenklatür studio where many analog devices are used to re-cast and give the definitive body to our songs.
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like?
We are based in Paris where the scene is really prolific with many clubs and areas to play dance and electronic stuff.
How did you first start playing music?
We started in 1995 , Mitch who grew up in Metz close to the German border and Labinsect in Brittany who played as Dj and Live in Astropolis festival.
We launched a record label called Elektrofon in 2005 but after 4 years and about twenty vinyl and cd releases, we’ve decided to focus our energy composing our music.
What have you been working on recently?
We’ve just completed a remix for The Micronauts and we are preparing several EPs to release on different labels . We are also working on stuff with Commuter and Franck Kartell within combination pseudo. There is a remix on this Ep with this alias.
It’s been roughly a year since the release of ‘Atomised’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for this album?
As we had some troubles with our studio renter we had to find and build a new lab ready to produce music. Unfortunately when it was finished the new renter decided to sell his office including our new studio. We’ve produced Atomised in a hurry, with only 6 months before closing the doors of the studio.
Beside our troubles we are very influenced by movies and wanted to bring out a more quiet and slow album.
Something more listenable rather being a dj tool material.
Where and when did you record/produce?
We’ve produced each other separately and joined our respective work in our studio here in Paris.
Who did you work with during the production process?
We collaborated with our friend Commuter who helped us for mixing; he is also a good adviser for plugins and secret tools. He is of course a great partner as well as Franck Kartell.
How did you go about writing each track?
Inspiration comes through our daily life after seeing a movie , reading a book or through our relationship with people and friends.
What programs/instruments did you use?
We use Ableton Live and different pluggins combined with analog gear that we have collected over many years.
Minimoog , Six-trak , vintage samplers, Oberheim Sem, matrix 1000, but also digital gear like D50, Waldorf microwave for instance.
What did you find most challenging/rewarding during the recording/production process?
Making such different technologies working together in sync and also in the mix, that’s the challenge. We think we got it !!! It makes a lot of wires but it’s really worthwhile.
What did you learn from the whole creative process of Atomised?
We noticed that having too much time is sometimes unproductive.
A deadline is the best way to go ahead
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Lies records label a lot and artists like Tolouse low trax, Tzusing , Vatican Shadow, Cabaret Nocturne, Vox Low, Beak.
What do you like to do away from music?
Ping pong bar
You’ve recently released a remix of Atomised where you worked with 6 amazing French artists, who did you work with and why did you decide you choose these artists to work with?
Most of them are our friends. After the teasing of this album, we received some good feedback and it didn’t take long to convince remixers.
What did you communicate to each artist prior to them remixing a track?
We asked them to preserve the spirit of each track as much as possible. Some did it in that way whereas others took a different direction. You can easily recognize those tracks on the EP.
Were you surprised with the end results?
Yes a lot. It is very exciting to discover the rework of remixers. You can clearly identify the sound of each artist. It is very surprising to hear what they did with the stems.
Where did the remixing take place?
Each artist did it at home we supposed.
What are your plans for this incredible new remix album?
Every listener will find a track to his taste, some for dancefloor, some for listening at home close to the album concept.
Where can we listen?
On Every digital shops and streaming platforms on May 10th.
What do you have planned for 2019?
A new live show is coming with a brand new set up and a couple of EPs. The live show will be done without a computer with sampler and analogue gear.
Any secrets that you care to share?
We share more geek stuff with Commuter as he is our mixing guy
When are you playing next?
