Nocturnal, Blak & Bright Festival and Melbourne Writers Festival team up to present an unmissable celebration of First Nations artists of all disciplines inside Melbourne Museum.
Northern Territory-raised rapper BIRDZ continues to solidify his spot as one of the most exciting acts in the Australian music scene. In 2017, following an emotive Triple J Like A Version performance, the rapper released his debut album ‘Train Of Thought’ to critical acclaim taking out the Best Independent Hip Hop album at the 2018 AIR Awards.
Melbourne based duo The Merindas are a synthesis of warrior queen, on-trend style of rhythmic, expressive music dedicated to their cultural heritage and unprecedented on the Australian music scene. Accompanied on stage by the mastery of Jake Steele’s mixing skills, together they create an atmospheric fusion of Indigenous, electro-tribal pop.
DRMNGNOW is independent Naarm/Birraranga (Melbourne) based artist Neil Morris. His sound and approach, grounded in strong cultural and values fuse a striking interdisciplinary approach to his art as an MC, instrumentalist and poet with a searing decolonial and culturally engrossing message.
No stranger to the Melbourne party scene, Soju Gang is hard to miss, and her DJ flavour hard to resist. She spins a set as powerful and eclectic as her personal style. With deep roots in ’80s and ’90s hip-hop, R&B and everything party, Soju Gang has a hard-hitting presence in the local scene, and is swiftly becoming synonymous with a jam-packed dance floor and a night out so good you won’t remember much.
DJ KYAANZ is Kalyani Mumtaz. Ending her stint as the front person of Willow Beats, the electronic pop duo that sold-out shows across the country, Mumtaz brings her love of dancing to the decks. DJ KYAANZ seeks to create a fun and inclusive dance floor through a selection of pop, R&B, and First Nations bangers from around the globe.
Revellers can also explore ngulu wurneet, galada-al wurrung-u, parniwaru tyalingi, waran woorroong-ee, barringgi dyaling – River of Language – an immersive soundscape exhibition that celebrates UNESCO’s International Year of Indigenous Languages and the 25th Anniversary of the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages (VACL).

Byron Bay electronic quartet Tora will headline Nocturnal with their blissful sounds in October, celebrating the release of their sophomore LP Can’t Buy the Mood, out 9 August. Joining the band at the Museum are Brisbane DJ and producer SAMPOLOGY and rising star EILISH GILLIGAN (DJ set).
Tora have been spun on the BBC by Sir Elton John, clocked 100 million+ streams globally, and sold out sets in Melbourne, Paris, and London. Tone Deaf called them ‘enthralling’. Triple J’s Dave Ruby Howe declared their sounds ‘smooth like butter’. Melbourne, this is your once chance to catch Tora live on this tour.
The band will also appear in at The Lansdowne, Sydney, on Thursday 12 September and The Northern, Byron Bay, on Friday 27 September.
In 2017 Tora released their debut album, ‘Take A Rest’ , which was added to high rotation on triple j and received acclaim from Elton John (Beats 1), Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1), BBC 6 Music, rotation on Germany’s Flux FM and Radio Eins, as well as being a favourite amongst global tastemakers such as Line of Best Fit, Indie Shuffle and Pigeons & Planes. Alongside spins from LA’s premiere radio outlet KCRW, the album united fans and tastemakers and connected with all corners of the planet.
After playing at Glastonbury, Splendour In The Grass, The Great Escape, Canadian Music Week, and also supporting artists like RÜFÜS DO SOL, SAFIA and Miami Horror, the release of ‘Take A Rest’ saw Tora return to touring the world, supporting the likes of Oh Wonder (UK), as well as showcasing the album live in extensive jaunts through the UK, Europe and Australia and performing their own sold-out shows in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Melbourne and at home in Byron Bay.
