UNIVERSAL / POSITIVA 'FOREVER YOURS' (AVICII TRIBUTE) WITH KYGO, AVICII, SANDRO CAVAZZA OUT NOW During a trip across the US in 2016, Sandro Cavazza shared the early stages of the track with his friend, the beloved and acclaimed DJ/producer/musician/songwriter and performer Tim “Avicii” Bergling. Tim immediately started working on the track, but never got the chance to finish it before he tragically passed away. Inspired by Tim's demo version played at Ultra Music Festival, Kygo and Sandro have together produced a version to honour his memory. The single release of ‘Forever Yours (Avicii Tribute)’ will shortly be followed by a full length video where Kygo and Sandro Cavazza talk about the process of arriving at the final version, what Tim and this song meant to each of them. In 2015 Sandro Cavazza started working with Tim, top lining and co-writing songs for 2015's Stories album (Sunset Jesus, Gonna Love Ya). In 2016 Sandro was asked to join Tim on a bus tour, driving across the US going through national parks and writing music along the way, ending the tour in Miami for Tim’s show at Ultra Festival. “We wrote many songs during that trip, including ‘Without You’ in the back of a bus, but also songs that were premiered at Ultra when we arrived there for the show.” Sandro Cavazza Beyond their platinum selling record ‘Without You’, released on Avīci (01) in 2017, ‘Forever Yours’ was one of these songs. “I had shown it to Tim two days before starting the tour and Tim had come up with an incredible first demo that he asked me if he could play at Ultra. That was four years ago and I’ve lost a friend since. This version of Forever Yours is a tribute to Tim that me and Kygo has put together to honor what he has meant to both of us. He was Kygo’s biggest idol and his biggest inspiration and that’s what has made this tribute possible” Sandro continues. Out of the thousands of people who remembered hearing the mystery track during Avicii’s set at Ultra was Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, a.k.a DJ/producer Kygo. “That song felt special” says Kygo, who credits the late producer as inspiration for starting his electronic music journey. Like his biggest inspiration, Kygo became a world-renowned DJ and producer thanks to his countless hits and sold-out shows as well as headline performances. When Tim passed in April 2018, Sandro reached out to Kygo to see if he would want to put together a version of Forever Yours as a tribute to Tim, to honour what he had meant for both of them. For Kygo, it was a realisation of a goal for the DJ/producer. “When Sandro sent me that song, I felt like that was the closest I could get to collaborate with Tim” Kygo Kygo’s, Avicii’s and Sandro Cavazza’s net proceeds from the track will go to the nonprofit Tim Bergling Foundation which benefits organisations that support mental health issues, suicide prevention and education – as well as wildlife conservation and other issues that Bergling had an interest in and passion for. The all-ages show will kick off at 2pm on Saturday 15 February and aims to raise over $1 million. Tickets cost $55 and are on sale now here. People are also encouraged to make an additional donation at the time of purchase to help raise as much money as possible and to show how much the Northern Beaches community cares. All profits from the show, and booking fees through the ticketing agency Humanitix, will be donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery campaign. The Rural Fire Service (RFS) who have been partnering with Council at other summer events to raise funds, will also be onsite collecting for their bushfire appeal. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I’m currently based in Sydney, living in Cronulla. To my understanding, the music scene in town and around Sydney has been hit pretty hard by some really short sighted legislation over the last few years, some of which has very recently been repealed. I have high hopes that things will turn around and get better for artists and business, but that really comes down to people being willing to spend the money and time supporting local and independent artists. How did you first start playing music? I started singing lessons when I was in Year 6. I didn’t actually think anything would come of it, I just kind of figured out that I could do it and thought it keep it up as a creative outlet. When I started getting guitar lessons from my band mate Luke, we realised pretty quickly that something could be made of it if we could cobble some songs together. About a year later, here we are. What's been happening recently? Since pretty much the start of the year, Luke and I have been touring nationally with The Beautiful Girls, which has been fantastic. In between, we played the Make It Rain benefit in Byron, and that was just an amazing few nights. Beyond that, really just trying to consume and learn from as much new music as possible and trying desperately to write some new material. Have you been recording lately? Not since the first batch of recordings that yielded the songs we’ve released up until now. But myself and the band are keen to get back into the studio in the coming months to work on some new material that we’ve been playing around with for a few months. By that time, I should have already written up some new stuff too. In short, I’m optimistic that we’ll have some new stuff recorded within the year. How do you approach the recording process? The best approach, I think, is just to be as prepared as possible. Have the songs mostly finished either in your head or jammed out between the band. Also be willing to experiment and change up songs. It’s really hard to make changes to something that, in your head, already feels final and complete, but getting rid of that voice that says “don’t change anything, it won’t be as good” can open up a whole array of new ideas and sounds. Or it could be trash, in which case you’re going in with even less doubt about your original ideas. It’s win-win, really. What programs/instruments do you use? During the shows, I just play an acoustic guitar of Luke’s. Really beautiful piece of kit. Otherwise, I don’t play anything. My main instrument is definitely my voice. In the studio, we record the acoustic live and Luke will jump on his Jazzmaster for effects, riffs and whatnot. We use Cubebase to record the tracks. Who do you usually work with? For the most part, it’s myself, Luke, our drummer James and our bass player Chris that make up the band. In the studio, Luke and Ian Pritchett co-produce the material. What's been happening on the touring front? We kicked off on the Beautiful Girls’ tour at the very beginning of January. Since then it’s been either driving or flying from here to there, Queensland to Victoria back to NSW. A lot of really great shows, a lot of really great people. It’s great meeting people and talking to people in between and throughout shows, hearing what people think, what they like and what they don’t. It’s one of the best parts of touring, just seeing new people and new places. Who are you listening to at the moment? Over the last few weeks I’ve been trying to get to some artists that have been on my list for a while that I haven’t really explored yet. Most recently, I’ve been listening through Rage Against the Machine’s discography because it keeps me awake in transit. I’ll be moving on to Outkast and Björk after that. Radiohead, Talking Heads, David Bowie and Swans make up a consistent part of my music diet. And the odd individual album here and there. Sunbather by Deafheaven made an appearance, which is about the prettiest nightmare I’ve ever subjected myself to. Who or what influences your sound and songwriting? My songwriting is largely influenced by whatever I’m listening to at the current period in time. It’s never one artists necessarily, but I try to take the best parts or the best sounds or the best ideas from a few artists and turn it into something that, at the very least, sound like my own words. According to David Bowie, “Picasso said, it’s not what you steal, it’s how you use it”. At this point in my career, any comparisons to the people I idolise are welcome, because the people I idolise are brilliant. What do you like to do away from music? I do a lot of video gaming. A whole lot of video gaming. Probably too much, but I think there’s massive artistic merit in games that frequently overlooked. I try to read as much as possible as well. I’ve been chugging through David Byrne’s How Music Works, which is a really, really well-written and insightful read. I’ve also been attempting, albeit slower than I would like, to catch up on a lot of movies and TV that’s been sitting on a list for far too long. What's planned for 2020? Honestly, its hard to say. A lot of what we’re doing is playing by ear, seeing how our releases go and planning it out from there. We’re definitely keen to continue along with the tour, definitely keen to get in the studio at some point. A lot of writing in between, a lot of gigging. Basically just working on building up this pretty little empire in any way possible. Favourite food and place to hang out? It would either be pizza or chicken. In saying that, our family restaurant, Queen Margherita in Cronulla, makes a hell of a Bolognese. By far my favourite thing in the place. As for my favourite place to hang out, there’s really nothing like home for me. But I’ll find enjoyment any place as long as I’m with the right people who can keep me distracted enough to where I don’t miss my bed too much. Minuscule is the brainchild of ukulelist Laurel Minnes, harnessing the power of a 15-piece all-female choir and an eclectic backing band to create a powerful new form of feminist pop music. Minuscule ‘Lukewarm Love’ Premiere

What is your name and role in Heartlake? Our roles vary between members and expertise, Noah usually spends his time on stage looking at his nicely crafted pedal board, Giac chooses to hit drums as a form of communication following speech therapy in his younger years (true story), Luca tends to play a couple notes on the bass with beer in hand, and Liam is a walking megaphone, whilst struggling with singing/playing coordination. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? We’re based in the Northern Beaches, Sydney where there’s plenty young talented bands on the rise, and ones that have established themselves worldwide from the beaches that we all look up to for example Ocean Alley and Lime Cordiale who we supported for a couple shows on their dirt cheap tour in Dee Why 2018. How did Heartlake form? It all started with Giac, Luca (brothers) and Noah who’ve known each other for many years and shared the same love for music and enjoyed playing Sweet Child O’ Mine on repeat, which led to asking Liam who played football with Luca to front the band about a year in at the end of 2017 and actually beginning to craft an original sound. Your new single ’Watching over you’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? We had a number of different songs to choose from when deciding which would be the best to hit people’s ears first. We wanted to capture something that got into the hook fast to hopefully grab your attention, and something simple that can be remembered whilst exploring ways to build the instrumentation with a number of different effects to capture a demanding sound. We all have our own individual tastes and ways of playing and writing so therefore we carry a bunch of different influences whether you may hear them in the song or not. Some of these artists include The Wombats, RHCP, Lime Cordiale, Sticky Fingers, Kings of Leon, the 1975. How did you go about writing watching over you? Liam had come up with a verse guitar part and melody, but we needed something that would bring this together and build into a song. So we built the chorus around the bass hook which we felt created a solid statement and platform into making the general flow of the song clearer. When developing the song in the studio, our aim was to caption an insight into our sound for those listening for the first time and wanting to explore us further. How did you go about achieving the sound? We wanted to create a sense of punchiness and drive, which we achieved through the layering of guitars and vocals in the chorus, and locking in a bass and drum groove which we could build a song around, while creating interest with the use of delays and modulation for example throughout the verses and bridge. We’ve always had a lot of fun with effects when songwriting, and a lot of these sounds from our initial ideas were developed in the studio and we’d like to credit our producer for making that work. Where did you record? We recorded our single ‘Watching over you’ at a home based studio called ‘Jaminajar Music Production’ in Narrabeen with Paul Najar. We got the opportunity to record here when we one the Beaches ‘Northern Composure’ which has been a sick platform to get going for younger bands on the rise. What programs/instruments did you use during the recording/production process? We recording bass guitar and acoustic drums simultaneously in the same room, and following that we mic’d up guitar amps and processing most of our effects through a number of different plugins. Who did you record with? We recorded with Paul Najar, who has been great for us through his experience and professional manner in the studio really helped focus us and record the best possible version of our song. We’re so stoked with what he’s helped us achieve and we’re excited to get our music our out into the world. We hope you love it as much as we do. Please explain how you approached the recording process: We spent about a day tracking the drums and bass in the studio, this part was the most challenging as this is when we really critiqued the song and made sure we were doing what we wanted to do with the song and made small final adjustments with Paul, our producer. Giac probably had about 10 different takes on the kit as we were still experimenting with structure while recording. We moved onto guitars next and took a while exploring different sounds, and synths and vocals last once the rest of the song was laid down. Who are you listening to at the moment? We’re all different in our personal music tastes which is like a piece of the puzzle to our sound, currently we’re enjoying Tame Impala’s new stuff, the 1975, Lime Cordiale, the Weeknd, Mac Miller’s new album (Rest in Peace), Yungblud, Hockey Dad, Tora and Sticky Fingers ‘Yours to Keep’ album. What do you like to do away from music? We’ve all got our different interests, from the surf, to the gym, enjoying footy season, eating, drawing and painting, having a couple (which usually leads to 10) beers on a fine Saturday night, the list goes on. What’s planned for 2020? We’ve got a busy year ahead of us. We plan to get as many gigs under our belt as we can and get our name out there and release more music following Watching Over You, two of our members graduated high school last year so we’re gonna give it our all this year and see where it takes us. Favourite food and place to hangout? Favourite food is definitely burgers. We’ve been on a mission to find the tastiest burger around and can confirm that Bar Luca in the city is something else, the Blame Canada is the burger to beat (this is not sponsored). We keep ourselves entertained with anything that’s put in front of us, and enjoy taking the mick out of each other once every few minutes wherever we go.
