I just moved back from Berlin to Stockholm at the end of last year. The music scene in Stockholm in terms of studios and the amount of producers is insane. There’s studios in every corner and all of my friends are all like proper great producers, it’s a lot of competition but I think that’s healthy as well! Like Swedish competition, we write great songs and fight about the ideas but then afterwards we take a fika together. Live-wise it’s sad to say pretty awful! It was better but there’s a thing now that the government is shutting down clubs due to complaints from neighbours which is so stupid because if you buy an apartment in a noisy area there’s going to be people there. But we had like a huge demonstration about it recently to get the politicians to understand that culture is one of the most valuable assets regarding wellfare in a modern society. How did you first start playing music?
It started off with my sister that was a great drummer and I used to borrow her drum set when she was away from the house. Later on after a bunch of years of becoming a decent drummer myself, I started taking up piano at highschool.
So I asked my teacher if I could borrow the keys to the studio at the school because I didnt want to head home to the apartment because I knew my demons would come get me.
I spent a lot of nights in that studio trying to learn how to produce. It was a great place to learn and I got to have the confience to experience my own failures and eventually started getting the hang of it. I think that’s the most important key to being good at anything.
To fail so many times that you can’t fail anymore.. What’s been happening recently?Drinking a lot of coffee to drown my self doubts as always! I’ve also been reading a lot, a couple of nights back and forth to Berlin as well.
I’ve been working really hard together with my label (Nettwerk Music) to set up lots of single releases this year! I’ve also been writing even more material that will be recorded during this fall! Me and my friends are also recording live-sessions for the new singles since we want to show that I’m not a guy that only pushes buttons! I mean I push a lot of buttons but mostly piano keys!
You’ve released your new track ‘Quit’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
I recorded most of the things in my apartment in Berlin, then recorded the vocals and some real samples in my friends studio this spring which also ended up co-producing it with me!You’ve started using your own voice on recording now rather than session musicians, how and why did you choose to go in this direction?
I’ve always liked to push the boundries off what I think i’m capable of. Singing is such a human and empowering instrument if it’s used right. I’ve been putting a lot of years into practicing and practicing and now I felt I was ready to make this a proper artist. It also gives me more back since I get to sing my own lyrics. I love singing now, I never thought I would say that! For example my dad got married just a month ago, and when he cried when i played I realised that I made him cry with only a piano and voice, isn’t that amazing what vocals can do with humans.
You have have an EP on the way, how’s that coming along and what can we expect?
I do! together with more singles. It’s been done for 3 months now! I’m already writing on the things that will get released after that :)))
You can expect my most honest self, i don’t have filters any more. I’ve written about my biggest fears and mental complications. I’m really proud of the outcome and I hope people will take it in even though we live in a fast mcdonalds world.
What programs/instruments do you use?
It’s been recorded/produced in Logic and Pro tools but live I use ableton for my samples together with 2 drummers. I use everything that could make sound, why pick? There’s a lot of people that say like, oh I don’t use guitar, or no I don’t use synths. That to me only put boundaries on the creative side.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
My own Kickdrums and vocal takes. Other than that not much, but hmm… Ben Khan, Jai Paul, Great voices like Tom Odell or Justin Vernon ofc. I watch a lot of movies though! Should’ve asked me about that instead.
What do you like to do away from music?
Exercise, I run almost everyday down to my outside gym here. It’s really important for me to be able to exercise since otherwise my head will get crazy and my anxiety will get out of hand. Other things is drink Craft beer, hanging out with my mum (I do also have real friends my own age). I’m really into finding new clothes also, I love fashion but it’s so expensive.. Last time I was in Berlin I found these great sneakers from Acne but they cost like 600€.. So I just stood there imagining them, one day though!
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019?
Recording bunch of live-sessions, releasing 4 more singles which I really believe in! And hopefully tour with a bigger artist as support. I will also be a lot in Berlin, recording music videos and other stuff.
Any secrets that you care to share?
If you change the laces to new ones on your sneakers they look brand new!If you feel down say fuck you all for a week then focus on eating healthy, exercise, sleep and then buy a whole new outfit the next friday and then go out, that night will be the best night of your life.If you want to make chia-pudding but don’t want to wait for so long, just take more chia seeds than needed then give it a nice stir, now you have instant chia-pudding and that’s a great breakfast for you.If you hate vegetables but know they are healthy for you, put everything that’s healthy in a blender, then drink it fast and forget about it.
Anything vegan, you have to be kind to the animals otherwise you’re an ass!
Vietnameese or like all the kind of sharing street food. There’s a lot of good places in Stockholm! Prefrably with some local craft beer.
