What is your name/s and role within Modern Measure?
Kyle Holly – Producer & Drums
Charlie Thornton – Producer, Guitar, & Saxophone
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Atlanta GA. It’s one of the best music scenes in the country with electronic music being at the forefront. There’s always an inspiring show to see here.
How did Modern Measure form?
Kyle founded the project in 2013, with Charlie joining the project in the summer of 2014.
What’s been happening recently?
Lately, we’ve been working on new tracks to release after Happy Place in early 2020. We’re always working on new music.
Your new EP ‘Happy Place’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for Happy Place?
Happy Place is our most diverse release yet. It contains all the different styles that have inspired us over the years, to form our own sound. It also has a similar feel to the album we released in 2018, Cold Enough For Fire. Between these two releases, we truly have created our sound. Dominic Lalli from Big Gigantic inspired Charlie to bring the saxophone out of retirement. The sample based clip launching was inspired by Hunter Brown of STS9 from tracks like “Really What?” and “Instantly.”
Where and when did you write, record and produce?
Production started in the autumn of 2018, and wrapped up in July of 2019. Most of the tracks were started on Kyle’s laptop & home studio. However, we share everything on the cloud and collaborate on all of it. Cherry Blossom, the lead single, was recorded in Charlie’s home studio with our producer friend, Daily Bread. Blazer was also a fun one to produce, because we had our friend Obeah come up with the vocal concept. It’s a true Drum & Bass feel and he crushed it.
What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of Happy Place?
All of it was challenging and rewarding. It takes a lot of time to sound design, so that’s always the challenge. The most rewarding part of the process was that it made us better musicians and producers. It’s also rewarding getting the music released to the world, and getting positive feedback from fans.
What do you have planned for Happy Place?
We’re going to tour in support of the release and looking forward to getting back on the road to play all of the new stuff live. We’ve had a nice break from the road, and excited to bring this new feel to the stage.
Where can we buy/listen to Happy Place?
It’s available on all streaming outlets such as Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, BandCamp, YouTube etc. Extremely accessible.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Tame Impala, Zhu, Bonobo, Kaytranada, Birocratic, Tool, Spillage Village, EARTHGANG, Smino, Joey Pecararo, and Blink 182. Quite the mix right?
What do you like to do away from music?
We love to eat good food and spend time with good friends. Kyle is a big ATL sports fan, so there’s a lot of that in the downtime. We also enjoy traveling to see our fellow artist friends perform their shows. Its hard to get away from the music 🙂
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019 going into 2020?
We will be opening for STS9 at the Tabernacle in ATL on New Year’s Eve and that will transition us right into 2020.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Kyle’s favorite food is tough to pick, but it’s a toss up between Japanese and Mexican food. Charlie frequents all the ethnic foods on Buford Highway but will always choose Eight Sushi as a favorite. We enjoy hanging out at our local venues such as Terminal West, Aisle 5, Variety Playhouse, and Ravine. Anywhere the music is our friends are hanging out.
