What is your name and role?
My name is Marla Brown and I am a Professional Artist.
How did you start?
I was born and raised within the field of entertainment. I am a professional Dancer (have been for 14+years) and have recently transitioned into creating/writing music and sharing/performing them for the masses.
My Father is The Late Great Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown CD, so it was only right to continue on his legacy in my own unique way. So far beyond blessed. Ever grateful.
Where are you based?
I am based in London UK, but moved to Jamaica 2 years ago. Now I spend my time back and forth between countries depending on tour dates and so forth.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
My music writing process is solely a vibe, somewhat a meditation. Being a dancer I am all about feeling, expression and interpretation of music. So what I feel I translate into words in reverse to when I dance.
What are you working on right now?
I am launching my second E.P. titled Survivor, due for release 16th June 2017. The concept is related to surviving the system and/or relationships, whilst paying tribute to my Mum Yvonne Brown (track entitled Mumma Knows Best).
My first and previous E.P. (Deliverance), I paid tribute to my Dad on a song called Here Comes The King, so it was only right I do the same for my Queen.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I am extremely family orientated so spending time with my loved ones takes up most of my social time. They keep me smiling continuously! We are a very creative bunch so music is ever present in our households, from playing games to putting on mini shows for the rest of the family to dancing and or going to gatherings. Music is an immediate relative within my life.
How would you describe your music genre?
My music is a fusion of roots reggae, neo-soul and rnb. I am a fan of music so am easily influenced by the sweet sounds.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to unite the world one song and dance at a time. Unity is the foundation of survival.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I am currently listening to My Dad as his music is forever relevant to our existence here on earth, J Hus, a UK artist, House and Neo-soul compilations and a lot of Roots Dub.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
My top 5 influencers in life are, first and foremost God, my Parents, love and unity.
I don’t believe in icons.
When are you playing next?
I am heading to the US for festival seasons, i.e. Sierra Nevada, Reggae On the River, Summersplash etc and then back to Europe for the same to promote my new EP.
