What is your name and role within Marbin?
My name is Dani Rabin and I am the guitarist and co leader of the band (along with Danny Markovitch the saxophonist).
How did you start?
Me and Danny met in Israel in 2007 and started a little band over there. We had a great connection in terms of writing together and decided to move to Chicago together in 2008. Marbin started touring full time in 2011.
Where are you based?
Chicago.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Me and Danny get together once a year for a day or two to write an hour of music, then we go on the road for 250-300 days and play it for about a year and let let it sort itself out, then we go in the studio for a few days and make an album.
What are you working on right now?
We are currently touring playing the material that will be on our seventh album (Israeli Jazz). We plan on recording it in the fall.
What is your gear setup?
I play a suhr strat into a CAE OD 100 amp with one overdrive pedal a delay and reverb. I am much less picky about gear than I used to be.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I do very little outside music. I play other kinds of music as a hobby. Gypsy jazz country and folk mainly. I spend a good chunk of the day learning songs and writing and I think it informs my playing in Marbin but who knows.
How would you describe your music genre?
We call it good fusion.
Do you know any music theory?
Inside and out.
What are your plans for the future?
Plan to do exactly what we are doing: write the music we love be and go play it for people.
How did you get into music?
Metallica was my first love and the love of guitar solos set me on a path to find myself.
What are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment I’m really liking Johnny Hartman and hank Williams sr.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Guitar wise: SRV, Django, jimmy Rosenberg, Jeff beck and metheny.
Music wise Astor Piazzolla, leonard Cohen, kris kristophesron, Charlie parker and hank Williams.
When are you playing next?
Next weekend we have two shows in Minnesota and late June we go back on the road to VA NC PA area.
