What is your name and role within the band?
My name is Elly and i sing, drum and play guitar in MDS. Dan plays exactly the same as we swap.
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
We are currently based in Melbourne, Australia. The scene here is thriving like crazy. There is no shortage of talented bands, so there is always something cool to see on most nights of the week. There are so many cool pubs and venues around as well. Unfortunately we sometimes lose venues due to noise restrictions and other issues, but there is a pretty strong community around to help support the scene.
How did the band form?
I met Dan when he was a long haired metal head and he and I were both studying music in Melbourne a few years ago. We ended up hitting it off and jamming out some heavy stuff in the jazz rehearsal rooms until we got kicked out for making too much noise haha. We never thought it would become such a big part of our lives, but it has.
What’s been happening recently?
We have been spending a lot of time in our home studio lately working on new and old tracks (sorry neighbours). Getting super keen to release them into the world as we have been pretty quiet on that front for the last couple of years. We have also been playing shows around town, but are hoping to get on the road properly soon!
You have a new single ‘San Fran’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
When i wrote the lyrics to San Fran i had pictured a selfish, privileged and greedy individual who was blind to the fact that they were sucked into the modern materialistic world we live in.
Where and when did you record? Who did you work with during the recording/production?
We recorded San Fran about 6 months ago at a studio called Thirty Mill Studios with Colin Wynne and Mark Opitz. It was really cool because the studio is setup in an unassuming old brick house in Brunswick. It kept the vibe very chill and fun by not having the intimidating environment of a big studio.
How did you go about writing San Fran?
We wrote San Fran when we were jamming in a little shed by the coast with just a bass and a drum kit. It feels like the gritty undertones of that jam have managed to creep their way into the final version which is pretty cool!
Where can we listen/buy San Fran?
San Fran will be available on all your main streaming services like Spotify & iTunes etc. Also working on getting some physical copies for shows.
You’ve played many shows across the UK and Europe, how do these crowds differ to the crows that you play to in Australia?
We found there were heaps more places to play in UK as there are so many cities & crowds were more responsive than in Australia. However if you really look at it, they’re really not that different, which is crazy considering it’s on the other side of the world.
What do you find most challenging and rewarding when on tour?
Finding vegan friendly food is the most challenging thing on tour. I remember we once spent 3 hours going into every kebab shop in northern england asking for a falafel kebab & they had no idea what a falafel was, I think we ended up eating a hash brown kebab, which with the right amount of sauce is actually pretty good. The most rewarding thing is those few hours you have in between shows where you can go for a hike through sherwood forest or go look at an awesome castle. The traveling part for us, is so much fun. It also feels great smashing through a show in a new town, on the other side of the world, it gives you a pretty awesome buzz.
What do you like to do away from music?
I love riding motorbikes and gardening. Dan spends his time doing Muay Thai and skating.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of UK band ‘Estrons’ and Dans been on the Megadeth train.
You’ve signed to Harbour Booking Agency, how did this come about and how has the signing helped the band so far?
This is still a pretty fresh thing,so we are excited to see what happens this year, hopefully get some cool tours and festival spots. Our manager recommended us to one of the Harbour Agency and they loved our stuff, which we were over the moon about!
Any secrets you care to share?
I have to admit, to warm up my strings before a show, I sneak in some homemade ‘Rakija’ that my Macedonian grandparents make, which is sort of like grappa. I put it in a jam jar because why not, oh and it’s strong. Dans probably biggest secret is his fear of Kombucha Scobies, I’ve told him many times that there are other people like him out there, and that he can get help.
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019?
Release heaps of new music and videos, most of which we are already sitting on. To tour lots and pop our festival virginity if possible!
Favourite food and place to hangout?
La Panella on High St in Preston, they do amazing vegan bakeries items. We also used to love hanging out at The Brunswick Hotel 🙁
