What is your name and role within Manalion?
Mondo- Drums,Percussion,Sample Pad Lover
Duan & Only- Lead Singer, Guitar Axe, Keys, Man about town.
Residing in The Northern Beaches in Sydney. Our local venue is Moonshine Bar in Manly which holds about 200, usually has a good live music vibe from Thursdays through to Sundays. Its the place to go for live music and a good time on the sunny beaches.
How did Manalion start and what has brought you to this point?
Moonshine was the reason ManaLion came to be, we had a mutual friend ‘Monte’ who is the manager there, she suggested we meet each other and put a few songs together to perform live on a Sunday, sounded fun so we did just that. First show the place was packed, we sounded cool people seemed to dig it and we got asked to come back, that was 5 years ago….
D&O – We started off describing our sound as Dubtronic/Dirty Roots but over the years we’ve developed into a sound we now call Alt/Pop Fantasy Reggae.
How do you usually go about writing music and what influences your songwriting?
D&O – Either just noodling around on the gat and and singing random lyrics to find a melody or messing around with loops and experimenting with sounds in our DAW. Different things inspire me to write, travel is a big one, also different experiences whether good or bad, love, loss etc.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
D&O – Miguel, The Tesky Brothers, Chris Stapleton.
Mondo- Turnstile, Alien Weaponry, Biggie, Sticky Fingers, 70s Playlist.
You’ve recently toured Aus with Tunes Of I ! How were these shows? Any secret stories that you’d like to share?
Yeah the shows were great and it was good to liaise with the ‘Tunes’ boys again, we toured with them last year in NZ. Was great to play in front of a new audience and hit a bunch of killer venue’s that we’ve never played before. As for secret stories, a lot of fireball was consumed backstage that’s our liqour of choice, we had a backstage dance off and a pair of white pants were stretched far beyond there recommended size. Nothing to crazy just the usual rock n roll stuff.
How did the tour come about?
Both Tune’s of I and us share the same NZ booking agent, so after Tunes did the Ocean Alley AUS tour it made sense for them to put an AUS run together to follow up from that and they were kind enough to get us involved… Which we were more than stoked about.
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?
We’ve just dropped a new single ‘Sucker Punch’ and we’re currently working on new music and hoping to release our sophomore album early next year. Also we’re trying to book in as many shows as possible for the remainder of 2018.
What do you like to do outside of music?
Drink, eat, beach hangs with mates.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
DO- Everything!! Fav local place hang is Hotel Steyne (Moonshine Bar).
