What is your name and role within Lucifer Gunne?
I’m Rory McDonald, Lead Vocals and Bass-playing thing.
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
We’re all in Wellington, New Zealand, and to be honest, we have an awesome music scene over here. Bands like Pale Lady and Ego Valve are amongst my favorites from the capital and should definitely be checked out if you want a taste of the action.
How did you first start playing music?
Unless you count Guitar hero at mates places, it would have to be a drum kit that my parents got me for my 6th birthday. My dad was a drummer so I thought that gene of talent might’ve been passed on to me, unfortunately it must’ve skipped a generation, so at 7 I moved on to the guitar and I haven’t looked back since!
What have you been working on recently?
We’re currently all prepping for our first national tour, so we’re really just getting our set down and adding in some new tunes that have not yet been heard (unless you’ve been in a 10 metre radius of the office we work in), so we’re all pumped for people to hear what we have to offer.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the time of writing this interview I have Madvillain by Madvillainy on in the background, however on a day to day basis it’s a mix of Boris, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and Primus.
Your new single ‘Energenetic’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
I gotta tribute a lot of that song to the sound of IDLES, specifically their most recent project “Joy as an Act of Resistance”. We wanted to make something that was very chaotic and I feel like we achieved that pretty well. As far as the songs meaning goes, I can mainly attribute that to the people in life that irritate or irritated me a lot, and is just a bit of a silent jab and a release of aggression.
Where and when did you record?
We recorded at Elysian Sound Studios in October of last year, it was such a fun time working with the people of that studio, and I think our visions for the track were captured pretty well by the crew there, so big props to them.
How do you usually go about writing music?
It really does vary from song to song, but it’ll either be me or Don (one of our great guitarists) who will write a riff or sometimes full track to bring to practice, and we just see what sticks.
What do you like to do away from music?
Honestly a lot of what I do outside of music does relate back to it in some form, whether it’s going on walks and jotting down song ideas, or making some sketches when I get writers block, I just like to stay creative and take inspiration from everything that happens around me.
What do you have planned for 2019?
Defintely some more singles on the way for you, maybe even an album, who knows! This upcoming tour won’t be the last time you see LG on the road this year either, and we can only go bigger and better from here.
Any secrets that you care to share?
I don’t like to get anyone’s hopes up, but I definitely think it’s time to pay our friends from across the ditch a visit, don’t you?
Favourite food and place to hangout?
You can never go wrong with a burrito man, and if you don’t think so, then I respect your opinion of you but you’re wrong. I checked out this sick place in town yesterday called “The Ballroom”, good place in Wellington to drink beer and play pool with mates after a long day at work.
