Buzzy London quartet CHILDCARE reveal arresting new single Put Down Your Pen

CHILDCARE ~ ‘Put Down Your Pen’

“It probably will make you put down your pen and listen.” DIY

CHILDCARE strike a more sombre note on their latest single Put Down Your Pen, a muscle shuffle of a letter to a pen-friend, in a Smokey Robinson meets At The Drive In kind of a way. The sleepy, ever-descending bass groove draws you in, before angular guitar squalls bring you juddering back to your senses. Vocalist Ed Cares delivers his most softly spoken performance to date, before the invigorating chorus takes a more imperious turn.

On the track’s theme, Cares gives little away: “This song is about a penfriendship I had with someone.”

The group’s now oft recanted formation story remains a point of interest. It all started when Ed Cares, one of West London’s most in-demand male nannies, was overheard humming a song he had written, by Katie, aged six, who persuaded him to form a band. Josh, eight, boldly proclaimed: “You’re probably my second favourite artist after Katy Perry.”

Debut EP, Made Simple, released earlier this year, earned them all sorts of tastemaker acclaim and national radio play. Prestigious UK tastemakers DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Wonderland and The 405 all tipping the group as one’s to watch.

With a sling of festivals, including the legendary Reading and Leeds, and a recent Radio 1 Maida Vale sessiontucked safely under their belts, the band’s vivid and visceral live show has gone from strength to strength. Affirming this, the quartet set out on their first ever headline tour through November.

By adding yet another stellar single to their oeuvre in Put Down Your PenCHILDCARE look set to cement themselves as one of London’s most exciting emerging acts.

The quartet is completed by Emma Topolski (Bass, Vocals), Rich Legate (Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Glyn Daniels (Drums, Backing Vocals).
