Lisa Mitchell shares her acoustic version of the Spice Girls’ 1997 single ‘Stop’ todayFeaturing in the Spice Girls’ 1998 Spice World movie, the track emerges as a taster of a brand new acoustic five-track EP, When They Play That Song.

The track came about following her own version of The OC theme tune, a cover of the Phantom Planets’ ‘California’ that recently garnered an unexpected but nevertheless amazing reaction. As she explains; “I decided to record a few more tracks from around the same era and although the Spice Girls had already peaked by the time I was ten, I remember spending many an afternoon perfecting Sporty Spice’s signature high-kick move (I was a board-shorts and Mambo T-shirts kind of girl at that stage, so she was my favourite).”

The resultant When They Play That Song EP evolved on the back of the recording of ‘California’, the plan was to evoke an expensive sound (hah) with just acoustic guitars and vocals converging with a favourite nineties point of reference, singer-songwriter Aimee Mann.

Once again, Lisa picks it up; “I was in London earlier this year, staying around the corner from producer friend, Ant Whiting. I wanted to record some covers, as a project to refresh myself a little, having only my own music so far. Drawn to films, and those memorable song-moments. Initially, Ant and I recorded the theme-song to one of my old favourite TV shows, The OC (‘Californi’a by Phantom Planet) But then I decided to record a few more from around that time which resulted in a 90s-films-themed collection of tracks with songs from Cruel Intentions, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Spice Girls Movie and Baz Lurhman’s Romeo + Juliet.”

Lisa will be playing some intimate PARLOUR shows in Melbourne before heading to the UK and Europe on tour, for more information on how to get to her only upcoming Australian shows head here.
