Where are you currently based?
I’m based in Armadale, Western Australia.
How did you first start playing music?
All throughout primary school (and the early part of high school) I tried out different instruments, changing the instrument at least once a term until I settled on piano. I never actually made it to being graded because I was more interested in representing the school sports teams and being a bit social, which annoys me now looking back.
After that, it took a visit from my older brother to really get me into writing songs. He had brought home a few rhyme books when he came back from boarding and I was immediately drawn to the word play. I deconstructed the flow of one of his verses, plugged in my own and performed that “original” song as a year 9 assignment. Since then, I’ve been in love with rapping and writing music.
Please tell us about your involvement as a music director and producer of upcoming theater projection ‘The Outsiders”:
The Outsiders is a theatre and performance art show co-created, co-produced and co-written by Mohamed ‘Ayo’ Busari, Lisa Watson and I. Perth is home to so many budding creatives and I’m fortunate to be working alongside an incredibly talented team and cast. We’re excited to be supporting and showcasing talents from under-represented groups in the arts scene and bringing them to the fore at a mainstream event like Fringe, at the amazing State Theatre Centre of WA. Aside from all the standard running around a Producer does, I get to enhance my music experience by directing all musical aspects of the project. I’ll be involved with the writing and the composing as well, teaming up with our crew to bring out what I consider to be the most exciting part of the show… But I could be bias. Haha.
You’ll be hosting a gig December 19th at the Rechabite Hall ‘Hello Rooftop Bar’ in Perth. to raise funds for our show, please tell us about this experience:
Everyone in our team is an independent artist so we’re funding it all ourselves. We decided to lean on our growing community to put together a night of entertainment, all in the name of raising funds to put on the best debut show we could possibly pull together. It’ll be a night of incredible vibes so for those in Perth, come through and join us for an epic sundowner. Oh… And did I mention, I’ll be gracing the stage as well? Not only will I be performing 2 of my latest songs (one of which hasn’t been performed live yet), but I’ll also be performing an unreleased single I feature on, alongside my good friend and fellow Outsider, Ayuba.
What’s been happening with you musically?
I’ve spent the last couple months deeply engrossed in writing the script, production and all music related to the Outsiders, which has meant a bit of a quiet period on the music front. That’s all by design though. I want to come back in 2022 with a lot of new music, so keep an eye out. There will be some features dropping in the coming weeks that I definitely recommend you keep tabs on. Make sure to follow me on socials to keep up-to-date with the latest drops.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
A bit of a range to be fair. There’s a Zimbabwean artist I love called ‘Tvtendv’ (pronounced Ta-Ten-Duh) who recently dropped a new single called ’21st Century Love’ that I’ve been bumping a fair bit. The rest of my playlist features Kendrick Lamar, Zedyou, Tion Wayne and anybody/anything that comes out of the Peruvian Mafia Beats Production (PMBP) music lab. Artists like Renzomada, Pizz, Jay Lockin and Lit Zai have really made me fall in love with Latin trap. If you’re not already on it… Check it out and thank me later.
What do you like to do away from music?
I’m going to have to start by saying, away from music I’m usually extremely busy juggling my other projects (in theatre and youth/community engagement). That means when I get a break, I like to switch off. Lucky for me… I can play video games half-asleep so that’s my usual go to. I’m a “casual” gamer (I know my place) and I play a lot of Destiny 2, Borderlands 3 and Fifa when someone’s been talking enough trash. If it’s not that, you can put any sport in front me and I’ll be entertained endlessly. That’s both playing and watching.
What’s planned for 2022?
A few plans in the pipeline but I’ll share what’s confirmed. We’ll be debuting our Fringe show ‘The Outsiders’ at the State Theatre Centre of WA for 3 nights from the 14th to the 16th of January. I’ll also be releasing more music, with a bigger focus on live shows and events. I look forward to sharing more content across different platforms and types of media, to keep my followers entertained and feeling a sense of community. And ofcourse… More life, more love, more laughter.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
This is a tough questions because this is assuming I have time to hang out, at which point it becomes reliant on who I’m hanging out with at the time. With my good friend Csay, I’ve got to say Roast Duck from Good fortune is all we need. But when I’m looking for a place to hang out and grab a feed, I’d have to say Chimek chicken in Victoria Park. Not only is the chicken incredible, the place is a vibe. There’s usually basketball on the screens and like I said before, chuck some sport on and I’m good.
