Ahead Of Their First Show At The Great Escape

Friday May 18th at Beach House Stage

London based indie trio KOATES have announced the release of their new single ‘Escalators’ out Friday May 4th. The high-octane single comes ahead of the band’s debut performance at The Great Escape, May 18th, where they’ll be playing the Beach House stage.

Through a string of serendipitous events, the band came together when front-man James, in search of a new guitar, ran into bassist JoJo playing in a guitar shop on Denmark street. The pair hit it off and James left with both a new guitar and the bands bassist. Shortly after James and JoJo met drummer Joe whilst he was on a date in a curry house on Brick Lane.  Joe’s date didn’t go so well, but KOATES had found their drummer and the band was formed.

Fast forward to present day, and with only a handful of gigs under their belts, KOATES have already developed a sound and song-writing dynamic that would best be described as the love-child of Mac Demarco, The Police and Fleetwood Mac.

Produced by Larry Hibbitt (Nothing But Thieves, Don Broco), KOATES debut single ‘Escalators’ has a refreshingly upbeat rhythm which sits in stark contrast to lyrics touching upon the complications when faced with a relationship break-up. “Silver staircase, always going up and down. Try to run the other way, but it keeps on coming round”

On recording ‘Escalators’ the band said…

“We turned up to record in a converted barn in the middle of nowhere and were blown away by how beautiful the place was. If things got too heavy we could just nip out into the fields and spend some time with the swans. The tranquility of being in the countryside paired with Larry’s wizardry behind the desk made for a really productive recording environment”.

Frontman James also said “This song had been buzzing around my head for a while, It wasn’t until I was going through a difficult time in a relationship that the lyrics flew out naturally, along with JoJo putting himself in my shoes”.

Following The Great Escape Festival, you can catch James, JoJo and Joe on stage at Paper Dress Vintage on June 7th and The Sebright Arms on July 20th, August 17th and September 21st for their forthcoming KOATES’ monthly residency.
