KANADIA

What is your name and role within the band?
I’m James, I’m the singer and guitarist.

How did you start?

Myself and Melissa were in a band in Devon but decided to relocate to the city and find more members.

Where are you based?

Oxford.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Our music writing process is fairly slow, we sometimes have idea for a year plus. One day an idea can just fall into place and it becomes so obvious. We are probably perfectionists, which has its pros and cons. However sometimes we will just jam and something really great will come out of it.

What are you working on right now?

We are currently working on finishing up our debut album and shooting music videos.

What is your gear setup?

I use a few guitars for different tunings but my main guitar is an Epiphone Sheraton. I run it through a fair few pedals but my favourite has to be the Strymon Blue Sky.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

Outside of music I actually work full time on getting the band to where we want it to be. It can be quite tiring and I feel a bit like a businessman and times but I have to remember the whole reason I am doing it is for the music to be heard.

How would you describe your music genre?

I usually describe us as an Alternative Rock band.

Do you know any music theory?

I used to know some back in school and college but the more I started to song write the more It went out the window. I prefer to write by feeling over theory. In my opinion its better to be blind to the rules of music because you will end up doing things your own way.

What are your plans for the future?

To plug our releases hard and play as much as we can and develop as much as we can.

How did you get into music?

I went fishing with my uncle when I was 9 and heard Incesticide by Nirvana. For some reason Hairspray Queen appealed to me a lot at that age, I had never heard anything like it. I felt like a bit of an outsider at that age and I really related to the expressiveness of Nirvana. I was hooked and knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

What are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I have been listening to My morning Jacket’s Circuital and Radiohead’s Moon shaped Pool a lot.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Radiohead

My Morning Jacket

Nirvana

Beach House

Kings Of Leon.

When are you playing next?

July 20th at The Horn in St Albans.
