Where are you currently based?
I’m currently based in Brighton, UK.
Your an Australian artist that focuses on America as a concept and ideal, please explain further what influences you?
I am an Australian artist, I’ve taken on a romanticised notion of America and written some songs about it. It turns out there were enough to actually dedicate an entire record to!
However, I’m influenced by a myriad of things, American and not. British music has had a huge influence on me. Australian landscape and culture has also undoubtedly shaped who i am as an artist.
I’m deeply influenced and affected by film, art and culture.
You thoughtfully explore the disparity between expectations and reality in realizing “the American Dream.” Why is this of interest to you? What brought upon this interest?
The “American Dream’ seems to encapsulate the pinnacle of achievement.
It’s not half a dream, it’s the full fizz Coca-Cola fantasy. I’m deeply intrigued by this idea, that we’re all in some small way just trying to achieve our own version of “the American Dream”. It does seem more attainable in America, simply because the notion of outrageous success is not frowned upon, like it is in so mnay other countries.
And I think that plays a huge part in the psyche of the people. It can either help one to embrace certain goals or in turn, be the downfall.
You’ve made a a graceful transition from rock into indie/alt folk music, why did this transition take place?
I’m not really sure why. It’s difficult to pinpoint an exact moment of transition, i’ve just fallen slowly into this place.
You have a healthy UK following; it’s interesting the way that your story resonates with the UK audience in contrast to the reception in the US, why do you think this is so?
I’ve been living on and off in the UK now for close to 12 years.
I’ve recorded and toured here consistently, so I have a relationship with a certain audience here, apart from one big support tour w Coldplay in the US, I can count on 2 hands how many shows Ive now played there.
I think that certainly plays a part. However, i HOPE to change that real soon, starting with my U.S tour in December!
Touring has played a major role in your musical journey, what do you enjoy most and dislike about touring?
I love getting up on stage and performing, I love singing my songs to audiences who appreciate it. I love the camaraderie on the road. I like travelling, feeling different things, meeting different people, discovery is a huge inspiration.
On the flip side, I hate being away from my family, i hate sleeping in shitty motels, i hate shit food, i hate being over exhausted and just having to make it work.
You have toured with the Killers and many other major artists, which act have you enjoyed touring with the most and why?
I have to say touring with The Killers over the years has proven to be hugely special for so many reasons. I’ve made some very special friendships and gotten to watch a massively successful band turn it on consistently. It’s inspiring.
What equipment do you use?
I prefer to use a Fender Twin Reverb or Deville amp, they’re super LOUD but sustain a lush open sound. Right now, I’m playing a Fender American Professional in a cool shade of blue. I love vintage guitars, however, they can tend to be hard work.
I use a Tremelo, Reverb and a Hot Cake pedal, which is a cool little overdrive stomper. I use a Beta 58 microphone.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Badbadnotgood, Mac Demarco, The Beach Boys, Cass McCombs, Kendrick Lamar
How do you approach the recording process?
I prefer to get my hands dirty. Go in with a bunch of songs and a band and knock em out live til you nail it. Then dress it all up pretty!
What can we expect for the future?
More records, more touring, more energy.
What influences your sound?
What is your favourite food and place to hang out?
I like Middle Eastern food a lot, Moroccan and Israeli kind of stuff.
I like hangin in dingy bars and hipster cafes.
