JERRY WILLIAMS

by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

My name is Jerry a Williams and I am the writer, lead singer and rhythm guitarist.

How did you start?

I started learning classical guitar from the age of 12. I got all the way up to Grade 8 standard but my real passion the whole time was songwriting. I played my first gig when I was 17. I was always so shy with my singing and songwriting before that, I’d only show my mum and I’d be like ‘don’t look at me haha.

Where are you based?

I’m based in Portsmouth. I love living by the sea.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

I tend to do chords first and lyrics seem to just fit over the top naturally. I love it when a song writes itself. Sometimes I write lyrics out like a poem, and perfect them like that.

What are you working on right now?

Loads of new music, working up to an album! So exciting.

What is your gear setup?

I play an Epiphone Les Paul Florentine electric guitar, a Vox amp and a Gibson acoustic at the moment.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I love hanging out with my friends and going for drives. I love second hand shopping as well. I have to sacrifice a lot with my friends but they are really supportive.

How would you describe your music genre?

I’d say it’s rainy sunshine indie pop.

Do you know any music theory?

I used to back when I was younger and at college but that’s long forgotten now! I can still read sheet music pretty good though.

What are your plans for the future?

More gigs, songwriting and being creative.

How did you get into music?

My parent were always listening to music when I was growing up. Coldplay, David Gray, Moby. The love of music just rubbed off on me.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m loving Kasabians new song ‘Ill Ray’ and a dirty grunge pop band called ‘Get Inuit’ as well.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Slow club, Coldplay, Vampire Weekend, Jamie T and David Gray.

When are you playing next?

I’m playing at The Great Escape festival in Brighton on the Thursday at The Box Stage at The Old Market and Saturday at Jubilee Gardens.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

I’m unsigned and self releasing and I love Derren Brown so much (random but I do haha).
