What is your name and role within the band?
Jared Deck. Singer, songwriter, acoustic guitar, and piano.
How did you start?
I began playing piano at age 6, played saxophone in band, and learned guitar in college. I began writing songs in college, and I started as the world’s worst songwriter. Despite this, I continued writing nonstop and developed into a decent songwriter… eventually.
Where are you based?
Please give an example of your music writing process?
I write melodies and chord progressions first. Then I hum melodies until a word or phrase begins to develop. Once I gain a concept, I work lyrics and edit them endlessly.
What are you working on right now?
Working on songs for my next (second) album.
What is your gear setup?
I play a Gretsch Rambler acoustic, a Taylor jumbo acoustic, and a Korg SV1 keyboard.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I enjoy podcasts and film. And, I’m somewhat of a political nerd. I enjoy learning about streetlight systems and boring thing like that.
How would you describe your music genre?
Americana Roots music, influenced by country, soul, and gospel roots.
Do you know any music theory?
This goes back to the nerd part. I love music theory; it’s a language between musicians.
What are your plans for the future?
Tour, tour, release record, and tour. Is there anything else?
How did you get into music?
I studied music in college and started a band during an ice storm. There were a bunch of students holed up in a friend’s trailer. We had nothing else to do, so we started jamming.
What are you listening to at the moment?
The new Vandoliers single, mixed by my producer, Wes Sharon.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Alejandro Escovedo, Lyle Lovett, Keb Mo, Lucinda Williams, Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
When are you playing next?
This weekend at Tulsa Mayfest and Windmill Festival in Spearman, TX.
