Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like?
I am actually living between LA and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland at the moment. Currently I’m in LA and have been for the last couple of months and I think we all know how insane the music scene is here. So many creative people collaborating and supporting each other and there is always something going on. I can’t wait to spend more time here and to get to know the place a little better.
How did you first start playing music?
My dad is the reason this whole music thing started for me. He was in bands as a drummer his whole life and growing up, made sure I knew how cool being a musician was.. He taught me the basics on his acoustic guitar and drum kit and after that I just became obsessed with it.
You’ve just spent the past month or so writing and recording in LA, what or who influenced your writing during this period?
Yeah I set up a little home studio in my room in West Hollywood and I’ve just been in my own head a lot. I would say the change of scenery has had an impact on my music. Really I’m just trying to keep my head straight, not focus on what everyone else is making and to just keep doing me.
How do you usually go about writing music?
It’s different every time. A lyric that pops into my head can start the process or even a drum loop that I come up with. Most of the time I just get this overwhelming feeling of inspiration that forces me onto my laptop and I just start messing around.
What were some of the most memorable times whilst on this latest LA trip?
Other than keeping to myself in my little studio dungeon, I’ve met some really inspiring people who have done amazing things with their life. I’d say getting to spend time with people like that has been really beneficial for me and a really big eye opener.
You have recently been on tour with fellow Aussie Dean Lewis, how did you come to be apart of this tour?
Dean’s a really good friend of mine and has been for a few years now. We met before all of this craziness and his success in a small studio in Sydney. He was rehearsing for a showcase and I was recording a new song. He heard the guitar riff I was trying to write lyrics to, let himself in and starting helping me out. Since then I’ve done a bunch of tours with him and really gotten to know him. He’s a fkn legend!
What did you do on this tour and what do you most enjoy about being/going on tour?
This tour for me was really about exploring these beautiful cities in North America, getting my music to as many ears as possible and finding my feet in this part of the world. Honestly I’m just so grateful to be able to travel around like that, meet new people and see all kinds of shit at such a young age. My parents didn’t have that luxury growing up so I thank my lucky stars everyday.
Your new track Down Side Of up is out now, what influenced the writing for this track?
My mate and I were unsure whether to write a happy or depressing song, so we kinda did both. I’m also a big fan of bands like ‘Ball Park Music’ and ‘San Cisco’ so those vibes could have been subconsciously coming out of me.
How did you go about recording Down Side Of Up?
We wrote the song in about 45 minutes in my bedroom and then I spent the rest of the day tracking the instruments in. That’s my favourite part so let’s just say I had fun that day..
What have you been working on recently?
Heaps of new songs and my live show predominantly.. And I’ve been attempting to go to the gym but I’ll keep you posted on that one. I’ve also finished up a new song, ’Take Our Time’ that is coming out very soon.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Jon Bellion’s new record ‘Glory Sound Prep’. That shit is hectic.. Because I’m a producer, I obviously obsess over the production and it’s next level on this album.
What do you like to do away from music?
I love to go to the movies. Like way too much aha. I dunno, there’s something really peaceful about it for me.
Any secrets that you care to share?
Ummm there’s new music in April And May….
What do you have planned for 2019?
Music, music and more music. Then shows, more music then maybe some more shows!
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Burger and fries… and the studio. Ideal scenario is eating a burger and fries in the studio..
