Melbourne based multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Mudie has unveiled his new solo project L.A. Mood last night on triple j’s Home & Hosed, chatting to Dom Alessio and premiering his lead single “Two Hearts”.
Mudie is the full-time drummer for Courtney Barnett, and plays various instruments in upwards of 40 other bands and counting. For him, touring down-time means burying into studio projects and local shows.
The debut EP Crushing Highs & Amazing Lows was recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland, produced by Collin Hegna of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It showcases a broad range of styles – slacker rock, indie-pop and alt-country; and influences – T. Rex, Dandy Warhols, Ty Segall etc.
As the title suggests, Crushing Highs & Amazing Lows ranges lyrically – from the relief of finding a lost pet, to paranoia and self-doubt. Distinct vocal harmonies pepper the EP, evidence of Mudie’s love of the 70s instilled by his musician parents. The EP’s artwork is by the amazing Celeste Potter.
Debut single “Virgin Song” was released on 7″ in April via the Bedroom Suck and Milk! Records Split Singles Club collaboration. As soon as it was released to the internet it was added to Double J rotation and featured on best new music for triple j Unearthed.
New single “Two Hearts” was premiered last night on triple j’s Home & Hosed program with the legendary Dom Alessio. With its Casio drum loop driving the song, and backing-vocals from Courtney Barnett on the choruses, this up-beat number makes you picture Ray-Ban wearing Californians boogying by the pool. It’s all about setting the L.A. mood after all…
Melbourne’s new Hotel Motel Records (the new label by Jo Syme from Big Scary) is releasing the EP, with distribution from Inertia Music.
