“Youthfire and Abraham Tilbury are the nicest boys on this together. It’s like if Bon Iver renovated that cabin in the woods into a hook up spot.” – 4 stars Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J Unearthed
Blossoming Melbourne artist Youthfire is back with a hot collab,
‘Nice Boys’ featuring Abraham Tilbury. Set for release Wednesday 22 May, the latest work of Stephen Carmichael bounces ideas of connection, disconnection, and timeless desires back and forth between the track’s visual origins, Youthfire’s own self-discovery, and the broader cultural and historical contexts surrounding queerness. Youthfire will launch ‘Nice Boys’ with a special single launch show at Melbourne’s hidden gem, Horse Bazaar this June.
Following from previous single ‘Emerging’, ‘Nice Boys’ sees Youthfire settling further into their own as an artist, producer, songwriter and person, pushing the boundaries of their sound with bold confidence and a strikingly beautiful sentiment. Working with local electronic artist Abraham Tilbury, ‘Nice Boys’ is a mellowed out trip that delves in and out of futuristic new wave and indie pop, pitting minimalist beats against mesmerizing vocal layers in an all encompassing exploration into the beauty of queer life. Self-recorded and produced with co-writing from Abraham Tilbury, the track also features Brisbane musicianKathryn Mckee on cello, was mixed by Tristan Hoogland (Huntly, Touch Sensitive, Golden Vessel) and mastered by Matthew Agoglia (The Gorillas, Joywave) at The Ranch Mastering.
“The lyrics behind ‘Nice Boys’ were inspired by the documentary, 100 Men. Filmmaker Paul Oremland reflects on 40 years of queer history and includes moving interviews with past lovers. In the end, Oremland reads out a classified ad from an old, 1980ʼs newspaper:“One nice boy wants another nice boy, to go to bed with and do everything else with.” I used this line as a central theme to explore, through my own personal experience, how I relate to the concept of love, relationships and sex as a queer person.” – Youthfire
Ever the collaborator, Stephen Carmichael has shared the stage with Melbourne soul powerhouse Mo•Louie and Abraham Tilbury at the Collarts campus launch late last year, and previously produced the celebratory launch event ‘Technicolour Wonderland’ duringMelbourne Music Week. Recently navigating the space between coming out, growing up, and finding belonging, Youthfire has become more than just a musical outlet for Stephen Carmichael. Now the embodiment of a true touchstone for Carmichael’s own self-discovery, join Youthfire as he launches ‘Nice Boys’ alongside a NEW live set featuringMo•Louie with special guests Yollks (live) and House Mum (DJ set) at Melbourne’s best-kept secret, Horse Bazaar this June.
