What is your name and role within the band?
Hi! We’re Illyus & Barrientos. We both write and produce all our music.
How did you start?
We started working in 2014, after a recommendation by Glasgow Underground’s Kevin McKay. We jammed a few ideas in the studio together, and then we released our first single on Glasgow Underground pretty quickly. It all kicked off from there!
Where are you based?
Please give an example of your music writing process?
We always start with finding a hook – whether it’s a chord progression or a cool vocal hook. And then we build everything around that, as an 8 or 16-bar loop. Once we reckon the full sound is there, we arrange it out roughly, and then fine-tune every section from the start. Then somehow we end up with a finished song!
What are you working on right now?
We’re working on a bunch of remixes at the moment, plus some new original material. We’ve just finished a track with vocals from the amazing Stee Downes.
What is your gear setup?
Illyus is more of a software geek, he prefers working on the production aspect of the music. We always work on Logic Pro, with the FabFilter VSTs. Ivan is more hardware, and works with hardware synths and software synths.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
We’re both definitely cinema fanatics. If anything, sometimes hearing the right soundtrack gives you more inspiration to come back and write something epic!
How would you describe your music genre?
House. Straight up.
Do you know any music theory?
Ivan does – he has sat his grade 5 theory exam many years ago…
What are your plans for the future?
Keep on writing and releasing on labels that we love. We’ve got a record coming out on Defected Records this month, plus forthcoming releases on Exploited, Glasgow Underground, and Nothing Else Matters.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Kendrick Lamar. Gold Panda. NxWorries. Father John Misty. Dorian Concept.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Hip Hop culture
When are you playing next?
You can catch us making our debut at Hideout Festival in Croatia in June.
