What is your name and role within the Hard-Ons?
Ray, bass player, vocals sometimes
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Sydney Australia. I do not know what the scene is like here. I am 53 with two kids. All I know is that the best venues I have been to recently have been the MOSHPIT and BANK HOTEL in Newtown, The BOWLO in Marrickville and the CROWBAR in Leichhardt, all superb venues. And The LANSDOWNE in Chippendale has made a comeback upstairs with a nice room, friendly staff and a fantastic P.A.
How did you first start playing music?
We were all huge rock fans in the mid 70s but when punk hit in 1977, it felt like anyone could form a band and I am not sure if I would have had the courage to form a band without the advent of punk in 1977. I joined the DEAD RATS in 1982 and we changed our name to the PLEBS straight away and by October 1982 we had changed our name again to the HARD-ONS
How do you usually go about writing songs?
I take my smart phone with me everywhere and will record riffs and melodies on there by singing into it. Then at band practice I will insist the other members amuse me by trying to play my ideas. I usually rely heavily on other members to finish off anything I start
What’s been happening recently?
Trying to get organised for our tour with Rose Tattoo. Mixing albums by Hard-ons, Nunchukka Superfly, and Wog. Three albums at the same time. Getting ready to release “HARDER AND HARDER” 7” for Record Store Day. It will be released by Music Farmers of Wollongong
You’re going on tour with Rose Tattoo at the end of March till early May, how did you come to be the support with this tour?
They asked us. We are friends with them
Favourite Rose Tattoo song?
“ROCK AND ROLL OUTLAW” for sure
What can we expect from this upcoming tour?
You can leave the grind of 9 to 5 behind for a few hours and get your ear-drums pummeled beyond belief. And as you lie in bed, you will hear a constant mid-range hum. It will mean you went and had a good time
What do you find most challenging and rewarding when on tour?
The most challenging for me personally is when long drives are involved, such as it is the case sometimes in Europe. The most rewarding would always be the 45 minutes on stage, especially if any punter happens to come tell us that they enjoyed the concert. I find that incredibly humbling and still feel extremely fortunate that there are people who like the Hard-ons
Any spots that you are most looking forward to play and if so, why?
Would have to be:
FRI 5 APRIL – Doncaster Shoppingtown Hotel + BABY 8
SAT 6 APRIL – Chelsea Heights Hotel + BABY 8
The Hard-ons have played Europe 19 times, Japan 6 times, USA 4 times, we have played Mexico, Tromsø on the arctic circle, Buenos Aires, Joensuu near the Russian border, we’ve played many places that I’d never ever visit but I have, thanks to the Hard-ons. But we’ve never played DONCASTER nor CHELSEA. So of course we are looking forward to that very much! We’d love to play Darwin one day
What do you like to do away from music?
I used to be an avid record collector but nowadays I love hanging out with my family, we have two little kids. If I get a moment to myself, I love looking after my Australian native garden, I have banksias, grevilleas, Acacias and Davidsonias
Who are you listening to at the moment?
THE COLLINS KIDS – a rockabilly band from the 50’s
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Favourite place to hang out would be the Illawarra region of NSW. I just feel very comfortable there. Beautiful natural surrounds and easy going unpretentious locals. Favourite food would have to be roasted sweet potatoes
