One of Australia’s hottest exports, wonder-woman, songwriter, producer and vocalist George Maple today shares the second single from her long awaited debut album due in October 2017; listen to “Hero” here.
Where Maple in previous work has explored the themes of strength, power, sex, desire and lust and fighting for equality, “Hero” exposes a far more fragile side of her psyche. It is an anthem to vulnerability.
Premiered on Good Nights on triple j last night, the track ignites and sparkles around a soaring, velveteen vocal, epic throwback production and the interpolation of “in your arms,” the classic line from 80’s pop staple “Waiting For A Star To Fall.” This sample was last re-interpreted by Mylo over a decade ago, and sounds fresh and vital in this powerful new context. The track was written and produced by George Maple, with mixing duties from Australia’s George Nicholas (Seekae) and Touch Sensitive on the bass!
Maple explains the song is a deeply personal narrative about finding strength in fragility.
“I was in a dark place and there was a lot of uncertainty, I felt alone even though I wasn’t, retrospectively it was a transitional period. Hero, explores the power of vulnerability and human fragility. The message is raw and unretouched, illuminating the scars and burdens we carry with us. We live in an age where we are ‘empowered’ and taught to be positive, strong, fierce, independent, self sufficient, to never show weakness. More often than not we end up feeling overwhelmed, alone, in conflict and fearful. This song is about embracing the strength in vulnerability. “
“Hero” follows a series of knock out singles which have propelled Maple as one of the most exciting and visually innovative artists of the moment, ensuring that her debut album will be a highlight of the year. “Kryptonite” saw her revel in libertine abandon, with rapidly ascendant rapper Jevon jumping on a remix which became a summer staple internationally with support from BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM and Capital FM.
2016’s series of original standout singles and collaborations clocked up over 43 million streams including the mega hit “Talk” (34 million streams), a rework of her original “Talk Talk” by number 1 billboard ranked dance artist DJ Snake. She also co- starred alongside male supermodel Jordan Barrett on the video for “Lover,” struggled in chains in spectacular slow motion with What So Not and Rome Fortune in “Buried” and dominated male villains, driving black 80s corvettes in the Goldlink featuring “Sticks and Horses.”
Maple’s acclaimed debut EP, Vacant Space, arrived via esteemed Australian label Future Classic (Flume, Chet Faker) in 2014, followed up with 2015’s “Where You End And I Begin” and “Gemini”, her monster collaboration with What So Not.
As a live performer Maple has had world-wide acclaim and sold out shows in London, L.A, New York and Australia. Her live shows an unmissable experience, Maple has hinted at a global tour to celebrate the album release however has not revealed any details.
She has confirmed Festival appearances through this spring and summer:
