Dot Dash is excited to share a new single and video from Gena Rose Bruce. New single ‘Rearview‘ was released this morning and comes with another Alex Badham directed video clip. Watch via the image below.
Gena explains – “This song is a conversation I could never have with this person, it’s about accepting failed love. I was angry at the time but I didn’t have the energy to stay angry or feel sorry for myself. We wanted to create a Twin Peaks vibe for this video, weird and dreamy. The video starts with me hopping into this driverless car, followed by a journey of eerie forest landscapes where I’m confronted by unexpected guests.”
‘Rearview‘ is the second single released via Dot Dash, from Gena’s forthcoming record Can’t Make You Love Me. The record is a distinct and dynamic debut from a young artist with a clear vision. Produced byTim Harvey (Teeth & Tongue, Lisa Mitchell), it also features notable performances from musician Jade Imagine on bass and guitar. The album’s creation and release have been three years in the making, with audiences getting their first glimpses via infectious singles ‘Coming Down’ and ‘The Way You Make Love’, which Bruce independently released last year.
Also announced today are details for the Can’t Make You Love Me album tour. Gena Rose Bruce will play Cobra Club, Northcote Social Club and The Junk Bar on the east coast in July/August following on from her sold-out Melbourne single launch at The Gasometer Upstairs.
There is a vibrant youthfulness and deep maturity that underpins Bruce’s songwriting, which allows Can’t Make You Love Me to swing effortlessly between earnest introspection and cool detachment with utter sincerity. Likewise intimate and ungraspable, Bruce’s vocals drive this album; a stirring force amidst the pulsing rhythms, echoes of Mazzy Star and Lynchian undertones. Add to this the masterful restraint in the arrangements and you have an album that is both instantly timeless and unmistakably contemporary.
Can’t Make You Love Me is an electrifying balance of tension and playfulness underpinned by a smouldering vocal performance that leaves audiences full of longing.
