“Couple this infectious banger with a stunning video juxtaposing cityscapes with lush, natural settings and you’ve got yourself a god damn winner of a debut single!” Purple Sneakers
Hello and welcome to the world of Powloh. With the release of his bangin’ debut single ‘Animal’, today marks a genesis, a fresh chapter, a birth of a new project by Melbourne’s producer and DJ Paulo Latuga.
Best known for his production tricks and chops under the alias Mikey HUNJ, Latuga is also the DJ behind one of Australia’s leading rappers Allday. Paulo explains, “In the midst of creating new music, there became an apparent split between two different sounds”. Here, sparked the emergence of Powloh.
A sound that can not be contained into one genre, ‘Animal’ sways between electronic, dancehall, pop and hip-hop. Straight off the batt, a bravado yet dreamy voice sets the scene for a story that floats and seduces subliminally. Twenty seconds in and the catchy pop hooks and repeated phrases unintentionally latch onto the brain. The beat is addictive, it’s compulsive, it’s irresistible. A beautiful metamorphosis from start to finish.
A tale of shifting values, disregarding conscious reasoning and going off instinct, ‘Animal’ explores the concept of having everything you need and fighting the human and animalistic inclination of wanting more. “It’s about being pulled toward a darker more dangerous place, but then in turn pulling the people you’re close to along with you because it doesn’t seem so bad once you’re in”, says Powloh.
Building on this concept visually, ‘Animal’ sees Paulo traversing through vast cityscapes and mysterious forests in solitary. His own internal journey, Powloh becomes more withdrawn whilst in pursuit of something greater, resulting in a colourful and enjoyable adventure into the unknown.
With such a strong debut release, there’s no doubting Powloh is on track to becoming one of the most exciting producer and singer combinations in recent times.
