The Fortitude Music Hall Presents Spectacular Spectacular 20th Anniversary Celebration of Moulin Rouge Ft. Members of Powderfinger, Superjesus + more

by the partae

Step right up!  Today, Brisbane’s premier live music venue The Fortitude Music Hall announces Spectacular, Spectacular, its largest, most ambitious original event to date on Friday 10 December. Transporting Brisbane audiences direct to Paris, Spectacular Spectacular is an extravaganza celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Baz Luhmann’s internationally adored, Golden Globe and Oscar winning masterpiece, Moulin Rouge. Be swept up in the glitz and glam and dress to impress as The Fortitude Musical Hall transforms into the totally over-the-top Parisian Theatre. Expect to hear all the ‘Silly Love Songs’ from the film as some of Brisbane’s favourite music personalities perform complete with dancers, costumes and a 15 piece band (with horns, don’t forget the horns!).

The Fortitude Music Hall team has hand-picked the best ragtag troop of showstoppers they could find. Lead guitarist in 18-time ARIA Award winning band Powderfinger, Darren Middleton trades his festival jacket for a suit and bowtie as he takes the stage to stretch his theatre muscles. Darren has long harboured a secret desire to do some musical theatre, “and for Moulin Rouge to come knocking at my door…I’m chuffed and rehearsing at home already! I may call in a few tips from Hugh and Guy Pearce for this role!” he says.

Joining Darren are some of the biggest female rock personalities in Australia, Brisbane’s first lady of indie-rock, Patience Hodgson, and Superjesus’ Sarah McLeod will both seduce and stun as they share the songs of Satine. They’re joined by powerhouse voices, Sahara Beck, Hope D and Tia Gostelow. Actor Eddie Baroo steps triumphantly into the role of the infamous Harold Zidler. Known for his appearances in Australia and Wolf Creek, Eddie commands attention whenever he enters a space and is sure to delight and enthral. Also joining the pack are Anji Greenwood from Brisbane girl gang VOIID, Zach Britt from hardcore band Dream on Dreamer, the Pauline Maudy from eclectic MZAZA and internationally renowned opera aficionado Bradley Daley. Arranged and performed by Brisbane’s theatrical art collective, Boss Moxi, the evening to remember will also feature the talents of the award winning Phluxus2 Dance Collective. Who will perform adrenaline-spiking faves like ‘Lady Marmalade’? Who’s going to belt out the iconic ‘Elephant Love Medley’? ‘Come What May’, we’ll find out soon enough.

The Moulin Rouge. A night club, a dance hall and a bordello. A kingdom of night time pleasures. Where the rich and powerful came to play with the young and beautiful creatures of the underworld – sounds a little bit like Fortitude Valley…right? For venue owner and artist John Collins (Powderfinger, The Predators), Spectacular Spectacular pays homage to Moulin Rouge’s rebellion of diverse artists, banding together during tough times. “Projects like this are a way for our team to flex their creative muscle and collaborate with the fantastic array of domestic talent we have at our fingertips. Getting to showcase the Fortitude Music Hall in new and different ways is a priority for us, especially in light of this catastrophic COVID period.”

Diamonds may be a girls’ best friend – but securing a limited ticket to Spectacular Spectacular is even finer. Those wanting to join in on the action can ‘can can’ with other excited revellers in the venue’s GA section or join the high society with a VIP package that includes table service and complimentary champagne on arrival.

Truth, beauty, freedom, love. It’s Spectacular Spectacular!
