Just weeks after his mammoth return with the widely praised ‘Paradise’, a track which marked the end of his two year hush from the stage, Melbourne’s musician and producer Edward R. today releases his follow up single, ‘Why Won’t You Love Me?’, premiered on The AU Review.
A blissful and dreamy expression of the mood of his forthcoming EP; ‘Why Won’t You Love Me?’ is an immersive 70’s-inflected slow jam on heartbreak and loneliness. Listen closer and the lovechild betweenTame Impala, Tobias Jesso Jr, and Tranquility Base era Alex Turner presents itself. With its reverberated guitars effortlessly ravelling around soaring melodies and serene synth tones, Edward R.has created a heavenly soundscape, a rock wonderland where time sits still. The short film below reflects this wholly, showing imagery of space shuttles travelling to eerie planets, a fitting contrast to his psychedelic twang. Oozing in sorrow and urging for affection, the story is one that many will find relatable:
‘I’m just a commoner looking for love in a world; and, as time goes on, I’m discovering I know less and less about both of those things.’ – Edward R.
Alongside ‘Paradise’, ‘Why Won’t You Love Me?’ is a taste of a five-song opus of intricate, immersive, psychedelic pop. Set for release October 12, the Body Corporate EP reflects a period of uncertainty and emotional turmoil. Elaborating on themes of love and heartache, the conceptual project follows the story of a man from the past, transported to the future in search of love. A collection of cinematic sounds that is guaranteed to envelope and immerse the listener.
Body Corporate is the follow up to Edward R.‘s much-loved 2016 debut EP Agrabah, a release which resulted in a triple j Unearthed Feature Artist spot, support slots with The Temper Trap, Holy Holy andLANKS, and over four million streams on standout single ‘Wolves and the Water’. With Edward R.’s musical rebirth already being supported by triple j and Purple Sneakers, fans too have flocked, packing out his single release show at The Foxxy Dolphin and three tremendous live showcases at this yearsBIGSOUND.
There’s no doubt anticipation for his Body Corporate EP is now at boiling point, but the young multidisciplinary Melbournite will be cranking the heat even higher. Taking his show on the road with a delicious selection of East Coast dates, catch Edward R. from mid November.
Body Corporate EP is out everywhere on We Are Golden from Friday October 12.
