Brisbane’s original thrash party duo DZ Deathrays have pushed the dial to 11 as they deliver one of the most surprising collabs this year with ‘Front Row Hustle’, a collaboration between Australian heavy weights Trials and Briggs, and young Australian hip-hop prodigy Jesswar.
DZ are long standing hip-hop fans, and had dreams to work on a hip-hop collaboration for some time. Having produced a lot of cross-genre works in his time, Trials seemed like the perfect fit. Trials has a real understanding and appreciation for what DZ Deathrays do, and was able to harness the original song and flip it, seamlessly mixing elements of hip-hop with DZ’s very own thrash party sound. Add Jesswar and Briggs’ vocal hooks in the mix, and ‘Front Row Hustle’, has grown into quite the beast of a track – and quite profoundly removed from its original sound.
“I kept all the grunt from the guitars and went to work with some 808’s, synths and a couple of crusty drum breaks. Add the 1/2 KO combo of Briggs + Jesswar to the mix and now I look like I been chewing on lemons all day.“ – Trials
Jesswar is a far step from the 15 year old living on the Gold Coast hearing DZ Deathrays for the first time. Now 22, she is storming through the Australian hip-hop scene. Her ferocious, fearless and commanding presence emanates through the track, resulting in an underlying energy that is impossible to ignore.
“I really enjoyed mixing elements of hip-hop with rock and having to change gears. The video shoot was especially dope, to be on set with Briggs, Trials and DZ, all together watching it come to life was an incredible experience!” – Jesswar
Being a big fan of Jesswar and DZ Deathrays respectively, Briggs jumped at the opportunity to work with Trials to ice the cake of this mammoth collaboration. His signature booming vocal adds the smoke, and hip hop grunt the track needed to take it from 10 to 100.
DZ Deathrays have hit the road again, this time covering areas of Australia that have been thirsty for a taste of DZ for years. The tour comes off the back of an epic 2018 for the band, who released their third LP Bloody Lovely which debuted at #4 on the overall ARIA Album Chart, delivered them their third ARIA Award nomination, brought Murray ‘OG Red Wiggle’ Cook to the stage at Splendour In The Grass, toured Europe and South Africa, and completed two massive tours on home soil, seeing them step into their biggest headline rooms to date (Enmore, Forum, Tivoli etc).
Arguably one of this year’s most unexpected team ups, ‘Front Row Hustle’ punches – get around it.
