Melbourne’s cult pop-mystiques, Dorsal Fins are back after an extended stay in the musical wilderness, returning with new single and video ‘Sugar‘, via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control Records. In the 5 years since their last release, Dorsal Fins have peeled back from the epic cast of 9 mates, entrusting the band’s songwriting trinity, Liam McGorry, and co-vocalists, aka The-Twin-Tweaks, Ella Thompson & Jarrad Brown to navigate a kaleidoscopic bag of sun-soaked horns, love-puddle funk, and brat-pop night moves.

Soak up a splash of fresh Dorsal Fins magic with epic new single ‘Sugar‘. An ecstatic song about instant gratification… the sugar hit, that social media like, that sweet online purchase. It’s Dorsal Fins meets Sesame Street with Wah-Wah Trumpet, a Bass Clarinet Choir, washed-out Wurlitzers, a funky beat and a classic double dare co-lead from Brown & Thompson bringing some big-fins-energy to this long-overdue new cut.

Of the accompanying video Ella Thompson shares, “We came up with the initial idea for the Sugar video with the delightful Izzie Austin during a car ride back from Heathcote, Victoria where Izzie had freshly taken our picture at the man-made Pink Cliffs there. Izzie meticulously brought the ideas together with ease and so much fun. The opening lyric of Sugar ‘Alexa tell me the news today’ sets the scene where we are wishing for a little bit of sugary escapism, to get us through some sticky times. The puppet who plays Alexa was made by Melbourne illustrator, Eleanor James. Her characters are whimsical & free, giving the once robotic object of amazon’s all-seeing doll ‘Alexa’ come to hand-crafted life.

She continues, “In a time where surveillance technology & data is ever-present, we are taking a moment to acknowledge its persuasiveness. The video features nods to the ‘Pop art’ era – drawing influences from a commercial culture where consumerism flourishes.”

Rising from an alt-pop aquatic dream, Dorsal Fins is the project of Liam McGorry, Ella Thompson & Jarrad Brown. Since plunging into the scene in 2015, Dorsal Fins have ventured into a surreal & constantly evolving sound that is all their own. Debut record Mind Renovation was triple j Feature Album on release in 2015 and second record Digital Zodiac followed swiftly in 2016. With luscious songwriting and twin-flame co-vocalists at the helm, it is no surprise that Dorsal Fins quickly earned a reputation for experimental, energetic & immense live shows around the country.

To celebrate their return, Dorsal Fins will be taking their new live show to the stage this summer, performing at Loch Hart Music Festival in January and a headline show at The Night Cat, with supports from Karate Boogaloo and DJ Friday. Tickets are on sale now.
