How did DJ-Duo KIDSØ start?
We both started with a band called BEATNIKBOY. Though with that band we played some kind of electronic-indie music, we had so much fun on trying digital and analog synths that we decided to start working on a new project. As BEATNIKBOY does not exists anymore and we love the sound we play nowadays, we put all our attention on KIDSØ.
What have you been up to recently?
We just came back from a weekend of tweaking on our live setup and equipment. As some shows will take place the next weeks and months, we spend time on working on our set and all the video visuals.
Your new EP ‘Apart’ is out now, where and when did you record?
We started working on that EP in 2017, somewhere around spring or summer. All songs are recorded by us. We spent time at our surrounding and sampled noises and sounds of the nature. Most of the samples you here in our songs are recorded somewhere close to Munich. We then put all the pieces together and finally came up with our debut release ‘Apart’.
What influenced the sound and songwriting for the EP?
We got more and more interested in analog synthesizers. The more we played around with them, the more we defined our sound. We started 2017 by just using analog instruments and synthesizers but quickly figured out, that we had to use laptops and software as well to bring a certain structure to our set. Beside, we were listening to musicians and artists like Christian Löffler and Parra for Cuva who also influenced us quite a lot.
How did the songwriting for the EP takes place?
We spend many weekends at a small place next to the lake Schliersee in Bavaria, which is in the southern part of Germany. At that place we both had all our equipment with us and had the chance to just concentrate on our music and instruments. Once the concept of all songs were done, we went back to our home studio in Munich and finalized all the tracks. That happened from mid of last year until this year’s summer.
Do you have a favourite track from the EP? I so why?
That changes from time to time. We both sometimes are completely hyped by one of our songs when listening to it for example in a club or bar. The other day it can be any other song from our EP still catching us emotionally. There is not that one favorite song for us to be honest.
What programs/instruments did you use?
Like most live artists do, we use Ableton Live in the studio and on stage. But beside that particular software, we are more focused on analog gears and instruments.
Did you collaborate with anybody?
We have some guest singers in some of our songs but will focus on that even more on upcoming releases. Also doing some remixes is something we have in our mind for 2019.
What do you like to do away from music?
We both like to go hiking. Bavaria is perfect for doing this with all the lakes and Alps right in front of our door-steps.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
We are currently listening a lot to Ólafur Arnalds (and his new release re:member).
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?
As we just released our debut EP, we will focus more on gigs in Germany. For beginning of 2019 we are currently planning first shows outside Germany. But all dates, once we published them, can be seen on our social media channels.
