Where are you currently based and what’s the music scene like there?
I live in Melbourne and it has a absolutely awesome music scene . It’s the best place to live as a music lover, no other city I’ve traveled to here or overseas compares. No matter what genre of music you are into, you are able to see multiple shows on any given night of the week !
How did you first start playing music?
I started playing drums in high school, moved to Melbourne when I was 18 and played in different punk bands for years until eventually turning my hand to songwriting a few years ago. All of my friends are in bands and Melbourne has a great supportive music scene that makes it easy to keep creating new interesting music.
Your debut single ‘Dialect Drum’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
Writing on acoustic and building the song from that standpoint for the first time was a big factor. I wanted to experiment more with different electronic drums and synthesisers to try and achieve a more unique sound. I was listening to bands like Health at the time and was loving the way they push boundaries with their music.
Where and when did you record?
I recorded it at Fallback Studios in Flemington
Who did you work with during the recording/production?
I collaborated with Aaron Dobos . He Produces / Mixes / Masters all of my music . He’s a gun !
What programs/instruments did you use?
We used acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, bass, synthesisers, electric guitars, electronic drums and different percussion. Whatever feeling the song needed in the moment we would use that instrument to try and achieve it. Having a ‘no-rules’ approach in the studio really makes it fun to experiment with different things. All recorded into pro-tools.
How did you go about writing Dialect Drum?
It was one that came together slowly over about a year period, I finally finished the structure and demoed it on acoustic guitar with some different electronic drums / instruments. But really got fleshed out and came into full fruition when I hit the studio with my producer over a couple day period.
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019?
Playing some shows, writing and releasing some more singles / video clips !
What do you like to do away from music?
I’ve gotten into Yoga pretty hardcore over the last year which has been fun and also just hanging out with my awesome mates as much as I can.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Death cab for cutie, Bjork, Ceres, LCD sound system, Battles, Sharon Van to name a few.
Any secrets that you care to share?
My next single is about our connection to Mother Nature and how we are losing that connection.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Mexican has been a pretty consistent feature in my diet as of late! And I’ve really been loving hanging out at the Tote in Collingwood. Its a short stroll from my house and always has a awesome warm inclusive vibe.
